I have been a Registered Nurse for over 25 years. Most of my younger career was as an Emergency Room nurse, however eventually branched out into teaching in a nursing program, and then Correctional Nursing. My roles have been diverse ranging from staff nurse, to educator, to manager/administrator. Throughout my career, I have experienced many good situations and people, and some very bad situations and people, all have impacted my life more than education alone ever could. My Christian "life" began when I was very young, however it is more profound and appreciated largely due to the many experiences (personally and professionally) and the people I have met and cared for over the years.I am married with 3 children and currently live in South Florida. I enjoy spending time with my family, nature, traveling, and my "time" with God.

    Introduction

I was a little girl when I decided I wanted to be a Nurse when I grew up. I enjoyed all the science and health-related classes in school, and I wanted a career that would allow me to help people. For me, becoming a nurse was the perfect, praiseworthy, career choice. My chosen career, I learned fairly quickly, was not as glamorous, perfect, or praiseworthy as I expected it would be. As a Registered Nurse for over 25 year, I have worked long (sometimes less than desirable) hours, days, and shifts, many of which included weekends and Holidays. My job did not consist of just obtaining vital signs, passing medication, and fluffing pillows, but also changing bedding, inserting tubes into unsavory places, and cleaning up various bodily fluids. In addition, my patients (and family members) were not always cooperative, grateful, and appreciative, but often times uncooperative, ungrateful, unappreciative and yes, sometimes downright mean and abusive. All that being said, I must say, that I have been blessed through it all to have experienced a variety of people and situations. My nursing career has allowed me to acquire vast experiences in an Emergency Room of a Level I Trauma Center in Detroit, as well as multiple ERs in Miami and Palm Beach; as an educator for a nursing program; and as an Assistant Director and Health Care Administrator for a large jail. I have seen, heard, and cared for many types of people in many situations. (Boy the stories I could tell!)

Recently, subsequent to a challenging couple of years during which I experienced the loss of one of these jobs, unexpected medical issues, major financial difficulties, and serious relationship trials, I sat down and pondered it all. I have to be honest, during this time, I did go through my periods of anger, confusion and self-pity, however, never being one to wallow (I feel it is detrimental to moving forward), for my benefit and thankfully, they were short-lived. More importantly, came an awareness of exactly how much all of these experiences (both personally and professionally) has taught me over the years. (Much more than my years of schooling alone ever could!) In addition, it occurred to me that much of what I learned and attained was not just from my own experiences, but also from those experiences of the many people I was privileged to meet and care for throughout my life and career. Experiences such as the fear and pain I observed in my gunshot trauma patient or heart attack patient and his/her family went through; the perseverance and strength of my nursing student who chose to go to nursing school following the death of her baby to SIDS; the hopelessness and discouragement of the 17 year old inmate (father of a 2 year and 8 month old) in jail for stealing. (By the way, when asked about the medical
