Project HEAL: Help to Eat, Accept and Live is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that raises money for people with eating disorders who are not able to afford treatment, and promotes healthy body image and self-esteem in hopes of preventing future eating disorders. The co-founders met while undergoing treatment for anorexia nervosa when they were just 15 years old, helped each other to reach full recovery, and then wanted to help others achieve it, as well.

We dedicate this book to the brave men and women working to overcome their eating disorders, and the friends and family members who support them.
Quote
I was bitten by an eating disorder at a tender young age but survived. I more than survived—I thrived. Things had come full circle. The pieces of the puzzle fit together into a beautiful, diverse, colorful mosaic—one that I now call my life.

Foreword
Dear Reader,
If you or a loved one is suffering from an eating disorder, it can be extremely hard to imagine a way out, much less a world where the eating disorder is gone. It is important for you to know that this is possible and to get a glimpse of what others have to say about it. As you turn the pages of this book, you encounter the world of recovery from those who have experienced it.
I have been recovered from an eating disorder since the early 1970s and since that time, it has been my life’s work to help others achieve that same goal. It is hard to say exactly when I developed anorexia or when I recovered because just as the illness starts in small steps and slowly grows until it entrenches one’s being, recovery works the same way. We don’t wake up one day with an eating disorder and we don't wake up one day recovered from one. Recovery is a journey that people take even though they might not always be sure they want to, are ready to, or know where they are going and what it is going to be like when they get there. Even though everyone’s journey is different, there are some things about the destination that are the same. I share these from my book 8 Keys to Recovery from an Eating Disorder so my clients know where we are headed:
Being recovered is when the person can accept his or her natural body size and shape and no longer has a self-destructive relationship with food or exercise. When you are recovered, food and weight take a proper perspective in your life, and what you weigh is not more important than who you are; in fact, actual numbers are of little or no importance at all. When recovered, you will not compromise your health or betray your soul to look a certain way, wear a certain size, or reach a certain number on the scale. When you are recovered, you do not use eating disorder behaviors to deal with, distract from, or cope with other problems.
To many people, recovery seems impossible, too hard or not worth it. I often felt like that too. When on a journey, like climbing a mountain peak, it is too daunting to look at the summit and much better to focus on the steps right in front of you. I often hear some version of My eating disorder is more powerful than I am.
To this I say, it can’t be more powerful than you, it is you … you give it all its power. The key is channelling your power in the right direction. If your eating disorder is tenacious, it means you are tenacious. If your eating disorder is wilful, it means you are wilful. If your eating disorder is cunning, it means you are cunning.
Everyone who has an eating disorder has a healthy self too. Recovery means finding professionals, individuals, books and experiences that help you strengthen your healthy self, getting it stronger and stronger until this part of you is back in control of your life and the eating disorder is no longer necessary. This probably seems hard to understand, but try your best to take in what the people in this book have to share about their own recovery journey. Know that they too, at one time, did not believe they would ever be different. There is no reason you cannot reclaim yourself and your life.
Find a quiet place, sit down, wander through this book and soak up the truth you find on these pages—that recovery is yours to have, and you are the only one who can keep yourself from it.
Recovery is yours to have and you are the only one who can keep yourself from it.

Introduction
Project HEAL and #Recovery is
As co-founders of Project HEAL, we wanted to share and bring awareness to our #recoveryis campaign and what it is like to suffer from an eating disorder, and then to have a success story. We both felt the need to let others like us know that an eating disorder does not mean the end of a life but rather a small speed bump or pit stop along the way. We saw how the #recoveryis campaign inspired young men and woman to share their eating disorder stories and battles. These stories not only began to bring awareness to what recovery means. They also showed the value of sharing uplifting experiences and triumphs.
To recover from an eating disorder, like any other mental disorder, is a life long battle. Having a group of men and woman send in their #recoveryis stories and successes began to inspire all individuals still battling their eating disorder. Each story and experience became its own narrative—one worth sharing with others in need of inspiration and motivation in order to keep moving forward in their recovery.
Each story and experience became its own narrative—one worth sharing with others in need of inspiration and motivation in order to keep moving forward in their recovery.
All the stories and life testimonials had an unexplainable power that moved and touched all those who needed a ray of hope. We realized that these stories needed to be shared and read. So we began a project we had never done before. We brought together the narratives of people from all over the world who battled and overcame their eating disorder. Together, these stories gained a life of their own and brought awareness to the complexities of a mental health/eating disorder. Each individual narrative, although centered on an individual eating disorder, was all so different. As testimonials, they began to shed light on the fact that recovery is possible, and each person has their own story and road to recovery worth sharing.
The following true narratives are from individuals who fought and overcame eating disorders and, to this day, still walk down the path of recovery. Recovery is inspirational. In hopes of motivating those still struggling to get on the path of recovery, we have put together this e-book full of stories
