While pastoring in Peterborough, from Trent University he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology.Ray pastored Baptist churches in Peterborough, Trenton, Port Hope, Oshawa and Scarborough for 32 years before retiring from pastoral service. Pastoral ministry, of course, involved all aspects of personal and family care. While pastoring, Ray took many practical ministry and counselling courses to enhance his skills as well a travelling province-wide teaching insightful seminars.Since retiring from pastoring, Ray has served as an Officiant, primarily for weddings.       About the Author

      Rev. Raymond Cross BTh, BA

      Life is an adventure for all of us. Where we start does not determine where we end. We may not be able to determine the raw material life provides but our choices along the way influence our route. Most significant is our choice of mate.

      My life began in Toronto in 1947. Early years were tumultuous as my parents struggled hopelessly to build happy and peaceful home life. The scars left me insecure about my capabilities to build a strong marriage.

      Following high school, I earned a Bachelor of Theology from Ontario Bible College, Toronto, and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Trent University in Peterborough.

      For 32 years, I pastored Canadian Baptist churches in Peterborough, Trenton, Port Hope, Oshawa and Scarborough, Ontario. Pastoral ministry involved all aspects of personal and family care. While pastoring, I took many practical ministry and counselling courses to enhance my skills.

      Since retiring from pastoring, I have served as an Officiant, primarily for weddings. My wedding website, http://brideschoiceofficiant.com, provides extensive resources to couples planning their wedding. Couples delight in the ceremonies this enables them to craft. I also maintain http://www.bridalvows.ca as a means of helping other Officiants with their celebrant services.

      What has thrilled me most about my life is being happily married since 1971 to Diane, a nutrition expert and public school teacher (retired). We have two grown children and three grandchildren. My kids, Andrea and Jeremy, were and are wonderful, with fascinating careers, but If I had known grandchildren were so much fun, I would have had them first!

      If you see Diane and I about town your will find us strolling hand in hand. We love doing everything together, especially to travel and explore white sand beaches. A natural extension of our love of travel is my periodic guest chaplaincies on cruises ships.

      This series of books about weddings flows out of my pure delight at being married to the most wonderful woman, and my earnest desire to provide to others the very best wedding experience possible. Of course, physical limitations limit how many I can touch and serve, so, in the books, I release my aspiration to upgrade the quality of weddings for those I cannot reach and serve directly.       Introduction

      Sensational weddings ought to pique intense interest, excite, stir joyous emotions and build unforgettable memories.

To focus on the celebration without adequate preparation for the quality and happiness of the union, however, is short sighted and unwise. How a really fulfilling marriage is achieved depends on more than words. It requires wise awareness of how to implement those commitments. It involves a delicate dance of two people through all the highways and byways, open spaces and obstructions, life sends their way.

      Almost Free Counselling

      Pre-marital counsel by a trained and knowledgeable counsellor usually costs much more that couples want to shoulder along with all the other wedding costs. So, I asked, "How can I provide this so everyone who wants pre-marital counselling can get it? How can I provide counsel that is easy and inexpensive?

      Counselling Yourselves

      The answer is counselling you provide yourself. The method stems from more than thirty years of pre-marital counselling, packaged to be easy for you. Packaged for do-it-yourselfers. Using carefully honed topical questionnaires and instructive articles, self-directed pre-marital counselling aids couples in determining ways they differ from one another, assess what significance those differences have to their compatibility and then discover together what adjustments might be necessary for those differences to be bent or blended for harmonious life together.

      Differences are not problems. Many times they are exactly what you want and what attracted you to each other in the first place. They will, however, always be matters you should discuss to celebrate or resolve. Just as in music, notes may be different but sound better when sung or played and blended together, so two individuals who are very different from each other can build a happy, lasting and constructive relationship that builds the intensity of their love and expands to a better life together than ever could have been enjoyed apart. Surely this is our hope from marriage. Otherwise why do it?

      Read and Grow articles included in this book provide instruction to help with areas of concern. They represent things my wife and I have learned in our pursuit of a happy marriage for more that forty years. Questionnaires and instruction together collaborate to build a good basis for meaningful and fruitful communication. By bringing together your honest independent responses with articles in this book, and then sharing these with each other in an atmosphere of attentiveness to each other and appreciation for each other, couples can celebrate their accords and learn how to happily blend their differences. It may be that spending time together in constructive discovery may provide most of what a professional counsellor would give you at much greater expense.
