About this ebook

Mark Nepo is emerging as one of the truly significant writers and thinkers of today. Nepo has a singular way of distilling great truths down to their essence. Moreover, during his cancer journey, Nepo relied on the power of expression and the writing process to keep him tethered to life. In Reduced to Joy, Mark Nepo explores the places where pain and joy are stitched to resilience, uncovering them with deep wisdom, poetic passages and personal revelations. Nepo reminds us all of the secret and sacred places within, forgotten in the noise and chatter of our busy distracted 21st Century lives. Reduced to Joy is a lesson in stillness, in standing in the mystery and, above all, in the work of love.

I know I am not alone is stating that this book arrived on a day when I needed to hear its message most. Mark Nepo's writing style has cured me of avoiding books of poetry. I have found that I can open the book to any page and find something relevant to my life experience every time. These poems make you think, make you take notice of everyday occurrences, make you question and turn inward. This book is, in short, comfort on paper, and a gem.

Evocative and emotive, simple poems about deeper thoughts of everyday life. Most enjoyable. Very accessible.

Very touching, very personal book - it spoke to me. The author's heart and soul was in every one of these poems. The words written are very profound - they have such deep meaning that it sometimes takes your breath away. Highly recommended.

For right now I am just saying I am finding it hard to get into the book. I think that part of it I don't care much for poetry but I will persevere and continue with it and hopefully give a better review after the first of the year.

This slim collection of poems fell into my hands when I needed it most - after the loss of my beloved companion of 15.2 years, my dog Sunny. This book helped me start the healing process (and was the only thing I could even read amidst such deep grief) and was filled with tiny reflections of "moments" in a life. The moments are of spiritual wanderings and God (or like, whatever a person chooses for their God, if he/she does), but also just very quiet and real slices of time amongst friends, lovers, grandparents, parents, family and of course, there are a few wonderful pieces on the love for and received from dogs. Nepo just "fits" for the way I hope to experience life, with an open heart and full of all of its complexity and wonder. I highly recommend this book for anyone who just wants to connect more with their loved ones (two legged or four legged) and/or wants to live a more meaningful life. I know that is is a LOT to say about a tiny collection of poems, but it is really that good. Highly recommended. Oh, and even if you don't like poetry, give these a chance. I almost want to call them miniature essays, as they are more reality based, but with the beautiful language of poetry.
