About the Author
Author’s Preface
I have spent the better part of my life getting back in touch with the spiritual energy I entered this world with, but apparently failed to nurture. It’s been a fascinating journey of rediscovery; it’s been long, arduous, beautiful, difficult, and enlightening. My journey has been a profound learning experience and at the same time an amazing teaching opportunity. I have come to appreciate the fact that I have been, and continue to be, presented with obstacles and opportunities to continue my spiritual growth. It is very clear to me that we come here a spiritual entity with work to do. And I believe the work is fairly simple and straight-forward, but because of our human-ness we make it complicated. Ancient teachers and sages have been telling us what our end game is spiritually for thousands of years:
Live by the golden rule. Love and respect everyone regardless of anything – always, and make no exceptions – ever.
Pretty simple, right?
Not so simple because when our soul arrives here, it comes into possession of a body – and that body comes with an ego. Once childbirth takes place and we enter the physical world, the light, free-flowing divine energy we felt in the ethereal plane now becomes heavier and slower here on the earthly plane. Over time we are clouded by the veil of human life itself: relationships, circumstances, beliefs, and yes, ego.
Our mind and energy become focused almost solely on all these aspects and we end up in some degree of angst and confusion. Our ego, environment, and the people in our lives are so strong that the spiritual side is often suppressed and starved. With an overbearing ego formed by ourselves and others, we forget the one simple reason we are here. We lose sight of the golden rule because ego makes everything about itself: its pain, its sadness, its wants and needs. We want to live by the golden rule, but our ego puts conditions on it.
Enriched Heart is the result of my research and life experience in spiritual nurturing. I have come to understand that a healthy balance can be achieved and maintained regarding spirit and ego. They can peacefully coexist, but it takes a lot of practice and reinforcement.
Enriched Heart explores the ancient philosophy of Tao. Not unlike any historically ancient teaching of all great teachers and sages, Tao guides us mere mortals in living a divine, peaceful, and a harmonious life. Enriched Heart also looks at the importance of other life practices in achieving the balanced mind and heart.
Introduction
Besides death and taxes, I’m pretty sure we can also count on the inevitability of someone always being there to piss us off, judge us, and flat-out be a thorn in our side. It’s also inevitable that we’ll be all those things to others and to ourselves as well! Hey, this is life! We’re also going to make a bazillion mistakes; we’re going to do really stupid things; we will feel like failures and at times we will simply lose our cool and have a melt-down. There are going to be times when you get mad and shake your fist; times when you scream and yell; times where you make a complete fool out of yourself; times where you cry uncontrollably. There will also be times when you feel like you are on top of the world and untouchable. Don’t get used to any state because it can and will change in a heartbeat.
We all have those times when we have had enough of someone or something and we cannot stop ourselves from retaliation with words. Especially when we can really let loose and scream those words! It’s frustrating to be dictated to, judged, or expected to live according to the rules of another simply because they think we should. This book will not cure you of your desire to go off on a screaming tangent, swear like a sailor or choke the living daylight out of someone. It is intended to help you find a good balance and make those times more manageable. Sometimes our anger or sadness is so strong the only thing that gives us temporary relief is to blow a gasket and lash out with ferocious words; sometimes rather than lashing out we retreat into dark silence. Neither is healthy; neither is a solution.
We are human. Shit happens. And when it does happen, understand it won’t be the last time. Don’t stand there in it! Step over it or step through it, but let’s get on with the process of loving and respecting ourselves and each other. All that stuff is just stuff. The purpose of this book is to learn to take yourself back.
The purpose is to learn to find your balance – to find your Center. To understand that if you want a better world, you must first get your own house in order. And to be comfortable in knowing that even as you begin to get yourself right – even when you think you’ve got it all figured out – you are always going to veer left or right of Center. And that is okay.
There comes a time when we begin to unfold. We allow ourselves to relax and look beyond that which we see in the mirror or that which we have been told during our life. We begin to let go a little and understand that we are connected to all that there is, all that there ever was, and all that will ever be. We learn to quiet ourselves. To feel the interconnectedness with the multi-dimensions that exist and the energy that flows through each of us.
We realize that we are indeed an extension of God, Source, a higher power, the universe, or whichever name we assign to our individual belief. And you’ll find within this book, I will refer to this divine source of energy in various terms, because the world and its many people and many languages all refer to this one source in various ways. Not one way is wrong, nor a better term than another. They are simply expressed in the language of the individual.
I love the fact that humanity is so diverse. We live by different philosophies, we are members of different religions, and we all conduct our lives in various ways. Yet the one thing we all have in common is the spiritual thread that flows through each of us, connecting us to each other. Spirit, the animating principal of our physical body, can also go by many names including soul, essence, inner-being, being, etc. Again, these terms are interchangeable throughout this book.
Many of us ask the questions of ourselves, Why am I here?
and we wait for some magical response or divine voice to feed us an answer. Truth is, we’re given the answer to that question all the time, regardless if we have asked the question or not. Life presents us with the answers, in full or in part, all the time in the form of relationships, connections, and circumstances. It’s really as simple as paying attention to life because life is a series of lessons and a host of teaching moments. I don’t believe we’re on a grading system or pass-fail; my guess is that when we are finished with the lesson – when our spirit believes it has learned enough – we can move on. Sometimes we find ourselves repeating lessons, sometimes not.
My quest started about twenty years ago and I am still in a constant state of learning and understanding. Over the last few years I have worked on trusting my intuition, being patient, and unconditional love. Sometimes the knowledge gained comes easy, sometimes it seems it needs to be drilled into me.
What I used to think of as life being unfair, I now realize was a part of the drilling process. Like the old comedy routine Who’s on First
– going round and round asking questions I already had the answers for. Over-complicating everything. I still need a ton of work on some issues, but I can at least see the lesson coming now rather than having to spend years discovering there was a lesson in whatever just transpired.
I decided years ago when I began writing books, I would try my best to write in ways that people might find easier to comprehend because this subject matter is not always easy to digest. With each passing year I continue to learn and understand life and the divine lessons woven into the fabric of our souls.
The last few years, especially, for me were very spiritually profound. Of course I have experienced loss before with the death of friends and family, but two recent losses made quite a spiritual impact on me. The death of my fourteen year old Saint Bernard in 2013 and subsequently my father a year later. Being with each of them at the precise moment of their passing was, albeit incredibly sad, a wonderful and magical experience.
What I came to realize is it is in the way we conduct our lives, the joy we give, the love we share, and the lessons we learn and teach while we are here that creates the indelible impressions upon our spirit. Upon death when all that remains of the physical body is an unanimated shell – the spirit dances merrily free, returning from whence it came. In both cases, I physically felt
