The Art of ZenDoodle - Sarah Benson
Introduction
Before you understand Zendoodle, you first have to know what Zentangle is. So we’re going to go over what the traditional Zentangle method is, and then I’m going to explain to you the benefits of this traditional method, which also translate to Zendoodle.
The Zentangle method of drawing meditation is a relaxing, easy, and fun way to make a beautiful image by drawing a structured pattern. Almost anyone is able to use this method to create beautiful pictures. It’s been known to increase focus and creativity, and provide an artistic outlet and satisfaction, along with an increased sense of personal equilibrium. This method has been enjoyed across the globe by people with a wide range of skill sets, ages, and interests.
The original Zentangles have several characteristics that define them.
The first of these characteristics is intuition. Zentangle art can be created by anyone and is beautiful with its repetitive patterns. It’s easy to learn and simple to do. And while it’s a specified series of steps, as you’ll see in later chapters, it results in a creative expression that exceeds its own rules.
The second characteristic is really two in one, fun and relaxing. Making Zentangle artwork provides a lighthearted and fun way to relax and intentionally create a shift in perspective and focus. This method of making art is unencumbered by creed and cost which can weigh in heavily on other approaches similar to Zentangle. Nevertheless, it’s well-structured and organized so that you’re able to enjoy and benefit from the activity that might otherwise be considered whimsical.
The third characteristic is the unexpected results. Zentangle encourages you to not have a preconceived idea of what the final result will be. Following this unusual approach to drawing, the creation is not restricted by expectations, and so you’re able to truly freely create anything you want.
The fourth characteristic is that it’s ceremonial. These simple, repetitive steps are part of the Zentangle method. The steps support focus, relaxation, and inspiration. And in a way, it can and should be a daily ritual.
The fifth characteristic is that Zentangle is timeless. Making designs, manipulating symbols, and putting the pen to the paper is part of the human heritage. In a time of computers, keywords, and cell phones, the simple strokes of Zentangle designs automatically make you participate in a familiar and comfortable act of creativity that is basic and timeless.
The sixth characteristic is that they are portable. Everything you need in order to create a Zentangle, a Zendoodle really, are all able to fit into a pocket! This simplistic method of relaxed focus can be
