About this ebook

A National Book Award nominee in 1975, Ludell is the first book in a groundbreaking trilogy about a young African American girl growing up during the 1950s in a small Georgia town. Ludell Wilson is a wisecracking bookworm and burgeoning writer who adores her best friend Ruthie Mae, her lovingbut strictgrandmother, and everything about growing up. (Including her first pair of blue jeans, and her first boyfriend.)

But in the still-segregated South, Ludells warm community exists side-by-side with poverty and injustice. Wilkinson’s bold, funny narrator, whose story continues in Ludell and Willie and Ludells New York Time, shows us an America that is also changing just not fast enough.

A young girl comes of age during the 1950's in the south. Her world is no bigger than the two neighbor families and school. Her mother left her with her grandmother soon after she was born. Ludell call her grandmother "mama" because she is the only mother she's ever known. While mama takes in white folks' laundry and cleans their houses, Ludell goes about her days hanging out with Ruthie Ann and her siblings. The author has written the dialogue and Ludell's inner monologue in the accent of the south and this made it a slower read, but the characters are so well drawn that it feels good to slow down your reading.
