About this ebook

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“If youre looking for a book to take on holiday this summer, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo has got all the glitz and glamour to make it a perfect beach read.” —Bustle

From the New York Times bestselling author of Daisy Jones & the Six—an entrancing and “wildly addictive journey of a reclusive Hollywood starlet” (PopSugar) as she reflects on her relentless rise to the top and the risks she took, the loves she lost, and the long-held secrets the public could never imagine.

Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?

Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ‘80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.

“Heartbreaking, yet beautiful” (Jamie Blynn, Us Weekly), The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is “Tinseltown drama at its finest” (Redbook): a mesmerizing journey through the splendor of old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means—and what it costs—to face the truth.

Evelyn Hugo has had seven husbands, but who is her great love? This was a very enjoyable read with likeable characters and lots of good takeaways.

At first I thought this novel was going to be fluff, a Harlequin . But I was enjoying it. Then I started really getting into the story and became fascinated by Evelyn Hugo and her complicated very interesting life. Why is she telling her life story to Monique Grant? We find it allOut in the end and it’s a deeply satisfying ending. This novel tells us that no one is all good or all bad. life is complex and living in this world with other people in it takes work. Monique writing Evelyn’s biography is enthralled, furious, confused, heartbroken, disappointed , shocked and uncomfortable . And I , the reader, am too along with a lot to think about.

A curious book. Emotional but complex. A lot of dislikeable characters with relatable emotions. Started off really not enjoying this but came around in the end. I'm not entirely sure if I agree with the message of what is justified in the pursuit of personal gain but I do agree with the notion that we are capable of abandoning our morals pretty fast when it comes to protecting the people we care about.

An aging reclusive Hollywood star, Evelyn Hugo, tells her life story to a young journalist, Monique Grant, a relatively unknown journalist. Monique is suspicious about the reason she has been chosen to write Evelyn’s official biography. This book reads as one giant soap opera – multiple marriages, cheating, divorces, lesbian relationships, lots of gossip, sex for favors, pregnancy, abortion, car accidents, and drug-related incidents. There is a lot of sexual content, written in a graphic manner. It gets extremely repetitive. I feel lukewarm about it. It is just too melodramatic for my taste. Others loved it but it’s not for me.

I really enjoyed this book. It was an entertaining read of an actress who is hard to love but you like her anyways. She had an incredibly colourful life and I loved the development of the characters that came in and out of her life. Great twist at the end that I didn't see coming. Well written and a great read.

Not quite up-and-coming journalist Monique Grant gets the chance of a lifetime to interview famous movie star Evelyn Hugo. But a typical interview isn't Evelyn's plan.

Early on (and throughout the book) we get "teasers" that soon Monique will know all Evelyn's secrets, and that she won't think quite so highly of Evelyn once she knows all. Early in the book I really rolled my eyes at this, but then I was immediately pulled into the story.

    Wonderful, wonderful book!

This was an intriguing read - and I can understand why it is a popular book. I enjoyed the mystery aspect but I was not a super fan of either of the main characters. So it fell just a tad bit flat for me there. I liked Monique's mom, though!

I listened to this first, only reading it months later because it was a book club book. Listening has made it ponderous with too long descriptions. Reading it I could skim those and get to the storyline quicker, thus enjoying it more. Beautiful seductive Evelyn grew up in poverty and escaped by using her body and her wits to get to Hollywood. She was always looking for someone to love her and she found it in an actress. However in the 50’s and 60’s lesbian lovers were a sure fire way to end a Hollywood actress’s career. Her happiest is when she married her male producer friend and her lover married the producer’s male lover. The foursome were seen together frequently withou people knowing the truth. The twist in this book comes at the end. We’ve heard Evelyn’s story as told to her biographer, then we hear why she chose this particular woman to write her story. Entertaining book.

Such an attention graving book. Just with the storyline starts to slow down the author pulls you back in. If you enjoy romance, scandal and old Hollywood then you’d enjoy this.

SO GOOD. This book had me at the edge of my seat for the past two days. The character development is truly incredible - I found myself rooting for a character only to hate them later on but then love them too. The story brings out the realistic element of being human so beautifully. 10/10 recommend!

Could not put this book down for 3 days. A surprising story with characters that you will care for deeply. It hit a few cliches at the end and some big moments seemed rather rushed, but nonetheless this is the first book I literally could not put down in many years.

This book was recommended to me by so many people. I refused to read a summary of it and find out what it was about because I actually wanted to be a bit surprised. I could not put this book down. It was a great read and caught myself tearing up from time to time. Many parts of this book were comforting to read in the sense that it gave me permission in a way to be okay with going against normalized ideas.

A lot of the times you see "a page-turner", you soon realise the description is exaggerated. This book does not have that written but deserves is it. Brilliant plot, brilliant dialogues, lots of issues raised, making you think them over and over again.
