The Ecology of Life and Mind
Kirk Holst
INTRODUCTION
The topic of this book is the evolution of our species. At present we are Homo sapiens, but it is now time to evolve into a new creation, a new species, Homo novus.
To survive and thrive in this 21st century, we will need to go through a radical transformation at a psychological level.
Our natural Homo sapiens Mind has brought us a long way, from hunter-gatherers to herdsmen and farmers, and now into this fast moving technological age that is fuelled by ever increasing levels of data and information. The rational level of our Homo sapiens Mind is a powerful tool; it can transplant organs of the body, send astronauts into outer space and create atomic warheads. Yet, we have not been able to truly discover and understand our own Mind.
As a species, we Homo sapiens are developing at an unprecedented rate in so many directions and at the same time. However, our Homo sapiens Mind, as clever as it is, cannot solve, or even imagine, the impending social, economic, ethical, environmental, and mental and physical health issues that are also arising at an equivalent unprecedented rate and are ready to overwhelm us.
Our survival is linked fairly and squarely with the evolution of human psychology.
Yes, it’s all to do with the Mind and nothing but the Mind. The premise is that we live our life in our Mind.
The Mind is the house we live in along with our thoughts and feelings.
Our life is very much to do with our thoughts and feelings, and especially our beliefs. Beliefs generate our life, both internally and externally. They create our character, personality, ethics, values, health and happiness.
It is the philosophies and ideas generated by our society’s collective thinking and believing that gives rise to the cultures and societies in which we live.
Mind, and its psychology, is the first principle of our life. It is then played out in the physical world in which we live.
After the Second World War, the prevailing ideology for the recovery of Western Europe was a philosophy of produce, consume and amass. The more you could amass, the more you could be a winner and, hence, happy and successful. This is a very old philosophy, but with modern technology, there has been no limit to how fast we have destroyed our natural world and replaced it with megacities that consume unimaginable energy and resources. Those resources are now beginning to stretch thin. Our population has almost trebled since 1945. It is unsustainable to continue as we are.
Produce, consume and amass is only a philosophy.
It is an ideology created in our Minds as all ideologies are.
This philosophy of consumption is now killing our forests, oceans, rivers, soils, air and countless living species.
Many more species are now endangered. At this rate, it is only a matter of time before it is our turn.
The question is whether we can avert this impending doom. My answer is a resounding ‘Yes, of course we can,’ but we must act now, immediately. Of all the animals and living life forms on Earth, we are the only ones with language and science. All other life forms are governed by their instinctive programming. Globally, we have brought into existence an ideology and philosophy that is now outdated and destructive of life. We can easily change it when we see a way forward.
As Homo sapiens, we will continue to create chaos and destruction for ourselves and our ecology. To survive and thrive, we must evolve now, right now.
From Homo sapiens, we must evolve into Homo novus. This is a psychological process that takes place in our Mind. As Homo sapiens, we have a written history of approximately four thousand years. That history is full of wars and intrigues, and of nations rising and falling. The underwriting philosophy has been one of power over others. Ironically though, within these ancient communities, there were always a few philosophers that hinted at a higher purpose of life. These people were the holy men, philosophers, saints and sages. In the Middle East, they were known as prophets and servants of God.
Today we live in a world of science and technology. Science has both saved many people and destroyed many people and species. There are competing ideas within science as to how life came about. The overriding ideology is that all is chance. Out of a primordial Big Bang, the Universe and our little planet, with its amazing life forms and symbiotic organic systems, evolved within an ecology made for life.
As Homo sapiens, we are considered the most evolved species known on Earth; the only ones with language and creative abilities. We humans consider that we are the ultimate evolved intelligence on our planet. We consider there may be higher intelligence out in the Universe, but we haven’t found it yet. If you study science, this is the prevailing viewpoint from which you start. This is the prevailing viewpoint of Western society. Science, as the seeker of ultimate truth, is intricately woven into our world view, along with produce, consume and amass.
The one science we haven’t unravelled yet is the science of the Mind.
All our discoveries in science are a product of our Mind’s cognitive abilities; yet, we have no idea what consciousness and Mind are! Just think about that a minute! Of course, scientists are aware of this, and now large budgets are being spent on neuroscience and quantum mechanics, but still the human Mind, its consciousness and cognitive abilities, are a mystery.
Now is the time to open the door to our Higher Mind and develop our higher potential to become a truly humane being, a Homo novus. This book has been written for those people who feel ready to look at themselves to discover who and what they really are as Homo sapiens, and to then prepare them to take the next step to regenerate into a Homo novus.
If this does not sound like you, then my suggestion is that you don’t read any further. The philosophies presented here may not be for you. The message within may cause you problems if you fight against it. If you do choose to continue, from here on in we will enter into the Mind of man and discover who we really are, what drives us, the good, the bad and the indifferent, the creative principle, how creation occurs, what consciousness is, the awareness scale and the very purpose of life. In essence, we will be uncovering the ecology of life and how to evolve.
AT THE HEART OF MATTER IS THE UNIVERSE OF THE MIND
All of creation is simply an expression of the Mind. The Mind is the mystery behind our created physical universe.
This is the premise upon which this entire ideology sits. It is the truth that will set us free. When we understand the Mind, we can create the society we really want, and that includes the life we really want. We have, in the last century, made astounding advances in the physical sciences, and it has brought about significant technological advances. Our world is now flooded with data and information that is readily accessible. However, our planet has never been so threatened environmentally and at so many levels that it threatens land, water, air and sea. To me, just as alarming is the social, psychological and physical health of humanity. As a society, this seems so overwhelming that many of us turn off and live for the moment. What else can we do? I am convinced there is an answer; it is possible to know, possible to achieve and possible to change. I have no doubt of these possibilities; stay with me and consider them yourself.
We are made of matter, flesh and bone, and we live in a world that is made of matter, within a Universe that is made of matter. This matter is all around us in the form of houses, roads, cars, buildings, tables and chairs, etc. The natural world is also made of matter, e.g. mountains, clouds, rivers, grasslands, forests, earth, rocks, etc. We can see, touch, smell, taste and hear the different forms of matter around us, yet, there is more to life than matter; there are our thoughts, feelings, ideologies and philosophies.
Thought and feeling are the two essences and activities of the Mind. Together, these two essences could be called consciousness, or life. It is these two fundamental essences, thought and feeling, that form a dynamic duo/partnership which we could call the life-force. It is this life-force that animates matter. All living organisms are trying to survive by avoiding pain and seeking pleasure e.g. food and propagation. As a human being, we are no different; we think about how we can avoid pain and gain pleasure. This is the game called life. I am going to refer to the study of thoughts and feelings as the study of the ecology of life and mind.
To understand the ecology of life and mind and to gain control of our thought processes hence life, is the motivation that drives a Homo novus.
This life-force is the product of a Mastermind, and our Mind can only exist within this force. As Homo sapiens, we can channel this force in the form of mental energy, and focus our thoughts into a particular outcome. This is also how we bring new forms of matter into existence. A simple example is a cake. From different forms of matter, e.g. flour, water, sugar, fruit, etc., we can create a totally new form, a cake. The knowledge to do this is a product
