Authenticity: Finding the Strength to Be Yourself
()
About this ebook
Authenticity is about strength and self-respect. It’s about defining you and your life on your terms.
Many of us have lost our voice, lost our dreams, lost ourselves, after years of living for other people. But there's still something inside of us longing to be seen and heard. We want to live real lives without conforming to the expectations of other people's dreams, goals and priorities. We want to stop living someone else’s life and start living our own. It’s time to figure out what it is we really want. We have to figure out who we are at the core, after the other stuff has been peeled away.
And that's what authenticity is all about: It’s about being honest with yourself and with others in order to live the life that you really want. The clearer you get, and the clearer you are, the more your life will come into alignment. The more you’ll attract the people and the experiences that meet you where you are. The more you’ll be able to stand in your own truth, in your own surety, regardless of anyone else’s actions.
It's not an easy process, but it is a simple one, and that's what this book is all about.
It will provide you with the strength to break free of your dwindling self-confidence, as people and circumstances have squeezed you smaller, and give you back your voice to tell the world what you will and will not accept.
It will teach you to take responsibility for yourself and your own well-being, rather than placing it in anyone else’s hands.
It will inspire you to interact with the world from a place of worthiness, where vulnerability and softness are no longer frightening, but rather empowering.
It will free you to love again with abandon, and no fear of rejection, backlash or abandonment.
Authenticity will engage your mind, heart, and spirit to cultivate the courage and compassion you need to live your own life.

Prologue
"Man is nothing else but that which he makes of himself. He is the sum of his actions." Sartre.
I wrote this book after having experienced a life changing event that challenged everything I knew about life and myself. In 2014, I was attacked, beaten with a hammer, set on fire with petrol, and lost thirty five percent of my skin to second degree burns. I underwent multiple skin grafts, six months of professional counselling and two years of physically rehabilitation to recover from this event.
The thoughts in this book were born out of this hugely negative event, and my recovery from it which changed me for the better. This single event had the capacity to take me deep into the core of myself. To redefine me. My value system was clarified and I got to examine everything I thought I knew about life, humanity and myself. I got to tune deeply into who I am and what I want.
I became real. It was the key to recovering from my challenge.
I know that many people today face equal challenges today around the world with terrorism, domestic violence, deaths, illnesses, and various other crazy events occurring daily. What others do to you is not as important as what you do to you, and how you choose to react afterwards. I know from hard earned experience, that those affected by difficult circumstances will have to dig deep within themselves to find sanity within themselves.
This book distills my learnings on
How to be real, genuinely you.
Why it is that tragedies and challenges can paradoxically create success?
What it takes to recover from difficulties, and how to do it?
What are the steps that others can take to learn from this?
I have learnt an enormous amount about myself. I learnt how to be honest. I learnt that I am vulnerable and that this is a good thing. I learnt what is valuable to me, and found the unshakeable core parts that will never be shaken again, and I have paradoxically learnt to trust myself and others deeply. I learnt to be in tune with who I am and what I want.
I learnt that as much as everyone around me was incredibly supportive, the bottom line was that my life and my recovery were in my own hands. If it was going to be, it was up to me. My ability to live my life in harmony with myself had to came with some clear habits that I needed to learn. Only I could choose the final outcome of my story and write the next chapter. Only I could figure out how to do this. In a nutshell, I learnt how to become my own best friend.
What it took for me to get to where I am today, healed, loved and successful was not a superficial solution, as it will not be for others affected by our global challenges. It was not created from trite pats on the back, flowers and get well messages, rather it was deep inner core work, and months of introspection, and physical activities to rebuild and rehabilitate, but I offer these learnings to you with love.
Introduction
Authenticity, being true to yourself is initially hard, but gets easier. It's definitely the road less travelled that Peck described. However, it is the beginning of a fulfilling journey where you are free to live with self-respect, a clear purpose and your head held high; and where you are free to create a life that fits you like a glove
