Putin's Kremlin - Lawrence E. Wilson
I wrote this book because …
My desire to raise awareness among free and democratic nations of the serious threat posed to their national security by Russia’s cyber warefare strategy.
Expose Vladimir Putin’s motives for global hegemony driven by his psychotic state of contempt for the West and unrestrained megalamania.
Reveal the fact that Russia’s national interests and related economic, social and military tactics are fundamentally opposed to those of free and democratic sovereign states.
Get the attention of leading politicians, military leaders and cyber security professionals concerning the need for a pro-ative and pre-emptive plan to isolate and degrade Russia’s cyber warefare infrastructure.
Serve as a catalyst for mobilizing a cooperative, sustained and holistic strategy by free nations to neutralize and defeat Russia’s global ambitions … of which cyber warfare is simply one component.
Provide a wake-up call for the new US government’s executive leadership, however well-intentioned, yet seemingly naïve, that Russian cyber warefare is a clear and present danger to national security.
Why You Should Read This Book
This book will help you…
Understand the true scope of the threat Russia’s cyber warfare strategic is currently and is likely to have in the near-term on free and democratic societies … and the individuals within those societies.
Comprehend the goals and ambitions of Russia’s cyber warfare plan as one component of its overarching resurging nationalism and position on the global stage.
Learn about Russia’s cyber deception and tactics for controlling western sovereign states politically, economically and militarily.
Motivate and enable members of the executive and legislative branches of democratic nations to take any and all actions needed to move from a defensive to an offensive posture when dealing with Russian aggression.
Intelligently support the governmental, military and private sector investments required to slay the Russian cyber bear and preserve freedom for peace-loving nations around the world.
Chapter 1. Introduction
What has led us to this juncture?
A short list of crucial factors has contributed to the current state of cyber warfare.
The past decade has seen the advancement of security protection, mitigation and prevention technologies … primarily security related software. At the same time offensive cyber intrusion and penetration tools have progressed at an even faster pace.
Another factor is vastly renewed Russian nationalism following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the dark, if not humiliating days of Boris Yeltsin’s presidency from July 10, 1991 – December 31, 1999. Many Russians believe his nearly decade long tenure brought economic decline and disgrace to this proud nation.
During the past 10-20 years Russia has strengthened its ties with China, now the second largest economy in the world. Russia has been a primary source of China’s ever-increasing appetite for natural resources. Both nations trace their contemporary political roots to highly centralized communist rule over their diverse populations. Both nations hold permanent seats on the UN Security Council and share a common foe – the United States. This rivalry spans economic, military and political realms. Moreover, Russia and China, while seeking to modernize, have strong reservations about the impact of western culture and free speech. Tight, government control over the media in general, and Internet in particular, especially when it comes to younger generations yearning for the perceived freedoms of western societies.
And finally, there is Vladimir Putin’s pathological desire for centralized control – domestically and internationally – commonly referred to as the Power Vertical. This is not to suggest that Putin is the coming Anti-Christ. Nonetheless, his policies and temperament have many similarities with this ominous figure awaiting his grand entrance to the global stage.
Key takeaways
Whether free and democratic countries, most notably the United States, like it or not we are already engaged in cyber warfare.
Russia and other communist nation states have quietly invested massive resources of funding, intellectual capital and political deception to proactively build offensive cyber warfare weaponry.
By contrast, the open, free and generally peace-loving western nations have been caught flat-footed due to their naivety. As such they find themselves in an underfunded, reactive and highly defensive posture as Russia has its
