Noel Francis caught the eye of Broadway producer Florenz Ziegfeld after she came to New York City from her native Texas. Noel soon appeared in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1925. Then with help from Ziegfeld she started acting in motion pictures. She signed with Fox Films. In the early 1930s she became typecast playing gun moll/floozie parts. Although she seldom received star billing her role as Lara in "I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang" is a most memorable role for her. At the same time she was making films Noel appeared in such Broadway hits as "Rio Rita" (1927) and "Show Girl" (1929).

    Noel Francis Sweeney Stevenson (August 31, 1906-October 30, 1959) was a dancer and actress originally from Temple, Texas. Listed on the 1910 U.S. Census as seven years old she may have been born in 1902 rather than 1906. Noel’s family lived on an estate in Bell County. The town of Temple eventually built around it. A blonde, 5’7", she had hazel eyes.

    Noel relocated to New York City to study at Columbia University. While she was a student she started taking dancing lessons at night. During this time she caught the attention of Florenz Edward Ziegfeld Jr. (1867-1932), the producer of the Ziegfeld Follies theatrical revues. His entertaining shows were a fixture on Broadway from 1907 through 1931. They were renewed in 1934 and 1936. Francis’ obtained her
