Essential Macs Mojave Edition - Kevin Wilson

    About the Author

Kevin Wilson has made a career out of technology and showing others how to use it. After earning a master’s degree in computer science, software engineering, and multimedia systems, Kevin worked as a tutor and college instructor, helping students master such subjects as multimedia, computer literacy and information technology. He currently serves as Elluminet Press Publishing’s senior writer and director, he periodically teaches computing at college in South Africa and serves as an IT trainer in England.

Kevin’s motto is clear: If you can’t explain something simply, you haven’t understood it well enough. To that end, he has created the Computer Essentials series, in which he breaks down complex technological subjects into smaller, easy-to-follow steps that students and ordinary computer users can put into practice.

    MacOS Mojave

MacOS Mojave 10.14 (pronounced Mo-hah-vee), is the fifteenth major release of Apple’s desktop operating system for Mac computers.

Macs come in different shapes and sizes.

    Mac mini

    Macbook series

    iMac series

    iMac Pro series

    MacPro series

According to Apple, the following Macs will be able to support MacOS Mojave

    iMac Pro (2017 onwards)

    Mac Pro (late 2013 onwards)

    MacBook Pro (mid 2012 onwards)

    MacBook Air (mid 2012 onwards)

    MacBook (early 2015 onwards)

    iMac (late 2012 onwards)

    Mac Mini (late 2012 onwards)

Keep this in mind if you’re upgrading from a previous version of MacOS.

    What’s New?

Mojave looks very much like its predecessors, El Capitan, Yosemite, and Sierra with a few minor interface refinements.

Mojave brings over several iOS apps such Stocks, News and Voice Memos, as well as Emojis for email.

Apple have enhanced the ‘Dark Mode’ feature, making it easier on the eyes especially when using your Mac for long periods of time.

Finder has a new gallery view, and Quickview has a few more features such as markup

Users can organise cluttered icons by automatically stacking files into groups based on file attribute. Just click on a stack to view the files.

A new feature called Dynamic Desktop adjusts the desktop wallpaper according to the time of the day...

The dock also now has a ‘recent apps’ section on the right hand side.

Mac App Store has been rewritten from the ground-up and now features a new interface similar to the App Store on iPhone/iPad. A new ‘Discover’ tab highlights new and updated apps.

Now you can use your iPhone or iPad to take a picture or scan a document, and have it automatically appear on your mac with a new feature called continuity camera.

    Setting up Your Mac

Setting up Mojave is pretty straight forward. If you haven’t already got it installed, you can find a tutorial in Chapter 7 of this guide.

Once it is installed and ready to go, you will need to connect your WiFi or internet connection.

Create an Apple ID if you haven’t already got one. If you do but didn’t enter it during installation, you can sign in with your Apple ID in system preferences under iCloud.

Also it’s a good idea to set up Time Machine using an external hard drive to do periodic automatic backups of your data.

    Power Up

The power button on the mac is on the top right of the keyboard on a MacBook laptop.

    or

On the Macbooks with the touch bar, you can unlock and power up your Mac using the touch sensor on the top right of the keyboard.

On the iMac and Mac Mini, the power button is situated on the back panel.

Press the button once to start up your mac.
