Difference Amplifiers

Low Cost, Precision Difference Amplifiers

The INA133 precision unity gain difference amplifier brings improved performance to this versatile circuit building block. Its high performance op amp and precision laser-trimmed resistors provide excellent common-mode rejection and gain accuracy. Its output swing to 1V of the rails and low quiescent current (1mA) are well-suited to modern designs. A dual version, INA2133, saves space and lowers cost. A companion product, the INA143, provides a differential gain of 10 or 1/10. It can also be configured for single-input gains of +10, 10, +11, or 1/10, and is also offered in a space-saving dual version, the INA2143.

High Voltage Difference Amplifiers

The INA146 provides high common-mode voltage rangefar beyond its power supply rails. Its precision 10:1 feedback network divides down input voltages, handling up to 100V common-mode signals on 12V supplies (or 40V common-mode on a single 5V supply). Gain can be accurately programmed with external resistors. Its great for measuring voltages on current shunts! The INA145 has a unity-gain difference amp input stage with the same resistor-programmed output gain. The INA145 and INA146 add a new dimension to the versatility of the difference amp.

Difference Amplifiers

The difference amplifier is a closedloop fixedgain block that allows the acquisition of signals in the presence

of ground loops and noise. These versatile devices can be used in a wide variety of circuit configurations.

Burr-Brown offers difference amplifiers for precision general purpose, audio, low power, high speed and high common-mode

voltage applications. Also available are dual difference amplifierssaving space and reducing cost per channel.

Difference Amplifier Topology

The basic difference amplifier employs an op amp and four on-chip precision matched resistors. The INA132 operates on a single 2.7V to 36V supply and consumes only 160A. It can be configured to provide a differential gain of 1 or 1, or single-ended gains of +1, 1, +1/2, or 1/2. The output signal is referenced to the Ref pin which is generally grounded. The output sense pin can be connected at the load to reduce gain error. Since the resistor network divides down the input voltages, difference amplifiers can operate with input signals that exceed the power supplies.

Package Selection
Our complete instrumentation amplifier product line is available in a wide range of popular packages including surface-mount and through-hole types. Many are now available in new fine-pitch microPackages. Dual versions save space and provide lower cost in multi-channel applications.

Build vs Buy
Difference amps and instrumentation amps require precision resistors to perform their intended function. A unity-gain difference amplifier constructed with a precision op amp and 1% film resistors yields a scant 46dB common-mode rejectionhardly precise! Even 0.1% resistors cannot achieve the performance of a quality integrated difference amp because individual resistors do not drift the same over temperature. The on-chip laser-trimmed film resistors in these modern difference and instrumentation amps track precisely over temperature, maintaining accurate gain and CMR characteristics. Discrete solutions simply don't measure up!

Instrumentation Amplifier Topologies

The three-op-amp topology is the benchmark for instrumentation amplifier performance. These devices provide a wide gain range (down to G=1) and generally offer highest performance. Symmetrical inverting and non-inverting gain paths provide better common-mode rejection at high frequencies. Some types use currentfeedback type input op amps which maintain excellent bandwidth in high gain. The two-op-amp topology can provide wider common-mode range. Their simpler internal circuitry allows lower cost, lower quiescent current and smaller package sizes. This topology, however, does not lend itself to gains less than four or five.

Single Supply Instrumentation Amplifiers

The INA122 is designed to offer exceptional performance when operating on a single power supplyparticularly at low operating voltage. The graph depicts the allowable common-mode input voltage versus output voltage for the INA122 compared to the INA128. Special input buffer circuitry extends the linear input common-mode voltages very close to ground (or negative rail on dual supplies).

4-20 Transmitter Devices

The 4-20mA transmitter provides a versatile instrumentation amplifier input with a current loop output. These devices also

include scaling, offsetting, sensor excitation and linearization circuitry. A current receiver, RCV420, is also available. This device

converts the transmitted current to a voltage. The two devices form a complete 4-20mA system that allows the accurate transmission

of analog signals over long distances.

XTR106

XTR105

4-20mA Topologies
Burr-Brown offers two basic types of two-wire 4-20mA transmitterscurrent excitation or voltage excitation. The XTR105, XTR112, and XTR114 provide current sources for exciting RTDs and bridges. The XTR106 provides voltage excitation for strain gages and pressure sensor bridges. Both types include linearization circuitry that can reduce sensor error by as much as 20:1. Linearization is accomplished by varying the sensor excitation current or voltage. An on-chip voltage regulator is provided for conveniently powering external circuitry. All circuitry is powered from the two-wire current loop used to transmit the signal. No power supply is required at the transmitter site.

4-20mA System
A complete 4-20mA system is shown using an XTR106 and the RCV420. Such a system is capable of measuring temperature or pressure at a distant location without a local power source. The sensor signal is amplified, linearized and transmitted as a current to a monitoring location. The signal is received by the RCV420 and scaled from the 4-20mA line into a voltage between 0 and 5V. Power for this entire system is supplied from the receiving side of the current loop. Two wires supply power to the transmitter circuitry and send the current-mode signal to the distant receiver.

Sensor Linearization
Key to the accuracy of several of these 4-20mA transmitters is their ability to linearize the output of many sensors. The platinum RTD, for example, has a very predictable resistance vs temperature characteristic. Its uncompensated response, however, has a substantial non linearity (several percent, depending on the range) that peaks at the midpoint. Components noted above include circuitry to dramatically improve the sensor nonlinearity and reduce the total error 40 to 1 (see corrected response). The XTR103, XTR105, XTR112 and XTR114 are optimized for signal conditioning and linearization of RTD temperature sensors and some bridges. Ratiometric sensors of many types (those whose output is proportional to an excitation voltage or current) can be linearized with these techniques. Voltage-excited bridge sensors (strain gages, for example) often have an upward or downward bowing response (see right). The XTR104 and XTR106 can substantially improve the accuracy of these devices. They achieve up to a 20:1 improvement in transfer function linearity.
