Standard # 5: Application of Content The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues. Name of Artifact: Beginning, Middle, and End Reflection Date: December 2011 Course: EDUC 201- Using Computers in Education Brief Description: This was a semester assignment used to assess personal views, skills, and awareness of our current forms of technology. This assignment required that we rate our competencies and then reflect on the level of skills pre-existing and acquired during this eight week course. Rationale: To demonstrate my knowledge of Standard #5 Application of Content, I have chosen to include my Beginning, Middle, and End Reflection because it illustrates my understanding of the being a reflexive learner by using skills acquired to engage future students using different forms of communication and technology.

You will learn much about educational technology as you read through your text. Rate yourself and your current competencies using the following checklist in order to determine your level of educational technology literacy at the beginning, middle and end of this course. Place an X in the space next to the competency you exhibit. You will revisit this two more times during the semester. It is completely normal to feel that you have some competencies and not others! After checking which competencies you possess, please reflect on your level of competency in relationship to the categories listed and what you can do to further develop that competency this semester. Each competency that you checked needs to be addressed in your reflection.

Beginning: Explain the thinking behind your rankings at th is time. In the past, educational technology was comprised of audiovisual equipment such as a tape recorder or videocassette player. Soon after, it was discovered that films incorporating sound and images could be used to teach as well. During WWII, technologies such as the overhead projector, slide projector and simulators were added to the technology repertoire. In the 1950s, the widespread use of the television helped to spur the education technology advancement. Since then, the advent of powerful and inexpensive computers have offered teachers an amazing array of teaching and learning support media from which to choose. (Lever-Duffy & McDonald, p. 39-40, 2011) To further my competencies this semester in this area, I plan on completing my assigned readings and exploring other websites that will allow me to correlate educational technology with standards that I will be responsible for teaching. Middle: Explain things that have changed or have been confirmed.

Beginning: Explain the thinking behind your ranking at this time. I believe educational technology comprises use of technology in a way that familiarizes children to the ever changing technological revolution around us, and, at the same time, it is a wonderful resource into people and places that may not be easily accessible to us otherwise. Technology can also be used to implement the main three learning theories of behavioral, cognitive and constructivism. The outcome of your students will result from both the teachers approach and technology utilized. With the change in times also come issues and concerns with fellow educators and parents. I am one of those that are on the fence about how much technology is too much technology. In these days and times you find more people interested in voicing their opinions through status updates, blogs, or Twitter accounts via Internet than you find people getting together with friends, family or colleagues. Although we Americans do have the right to freedom of speech, some abuse these rights to post harmful words and videos that have led to lawsuits, charges and arrests, and even to suicides or deaths. Middle: Explain things that have changed or have been confirmed.

The way I think of technology has changed much in the past several weeks. I have come to the revelation that technology is most definitely the way of the future and that my job, as a teacher, is to make sure my students are prepared for it. Technology can and will be a great tool to use in the classroom if it utilized correctly. Teachers must first familiarize themselves with the programming. It will be difficult to teach something you yourself do not understand. After the needed training of the teacher you must then set computer rules for the students safety. Teach the rules and be consistent with the rewards and consequences if rules are not followed. Once rules are established set your classroom environment for the assimilation of technology. The use of technology will change the dynamic of your classroom. It is by the instruction and preparation of the teacher whether that change will be a positive or negative one. Finally, once rules are established then introduction to technology can be made. Technology is great for teaching students of different languages and difficulty levels. End: Explain why your ideas changed or didnt change as a result of this class.

I am proud to say that I have a greater awareness of what my professional responsibilities are to educational technology. Technology is consistently evolving, changing the face of education as we know it. Technology is becoming a larger portion of classroom curriculum. With the integration of technology teachers must be aware of methods to secure students safety as well as teach proficiency. My ideals have changed a great deal since the beginning of this course. I realized how important it is for me to better familiarize myself with these new devices. Much of the technology today will be the prototype for up and coming devices. Technology can be a great resource for lifelong learning if they are used and taught properly. Technology can also be a hindrance if it is not focused to methodological knowledge. Realistically, our civilization is dependent on what one does now in this world of digital natives.

Beginning: Explain the thinking behind your ranking at this time. I can currently use technology to communicate with family and friends both near and far. For example when Microsoft re-released Xbox 360 with Kinetic you are now able to voice or video chat to friends and family through your game system. Anything that can be powered through wireless Internet gives you capability to always stay connected. Technology has been able to improve my professional productivity because I am able to reach any and all information at the click of a button through a search engine. If I am not sure of a particular name, fact or occurrence I can type in a few keywords and instantly receive access to what I need. Middle: Explain things that are confirmed or changed or confusing.

I am starting to learn about the technologies teachers use to create innovative lesson plans. I love the programming of Inspiration/Kidspration. I want to learn about other programs that can be used to create lesson plans, and that my students can learn from through their interaction with it. Programs like these will help me in my classroom setting but also websites like Delicious. Delicious is a social bookmarking site where one can store internet pages and resources in one convenient place. This will help me become more efficient because I will be able to access resources that can be of great help to me for a long length of time. Delicious also lets you form a network with people of similar interest to your own where you may browse through their bookmarks that are marked public. End: Explain why your ideas changed or didnt change as a result of this class.

As a result of this class, I am better equipped to properly use technical programs to create and design academically appealing documents. I have greater confidence in my abilities and look forward to sharing the knowledge I have accrued. I have been exposed to programs that will help me be more productive in both my personal and professional development. This class has made me realize how important

prepare a comprehensive instructional plan that uses technology effectively. use academic software to reinforce student learning. use the Internet for global communication and research. use a variety of technologies for precise and clear presentation of ideas. use most traditional and digital classroom technologies to support teaching and learning.

Beginning: Explain the thinking behind your ranking at this time. As mentioned before, I use the Internet a great deal for information; but I lack adequate skills to showcase this information to others that will benefit them. I think I get intimidated by the mass of programs and the many ways in which you can use them. I find myself getting frustrated if I do not know how to use certain programs since I have been around and on computers for most of my life. This semester I plan to explore, use and save all resources that will better equip me in my field of education and also help me to educate and demonstrate what I have learned to others. Middle: Explain things that are confirmed or changed or confusing.

After reading some chapters in the textbook I realized I do have some skills using traditional classroom technologies, like over head projectors and PowerPoint presentations. I have now been able to get more practice using computer programs for more precise presentations. I am ecstatic about my progress thus far and cannot wait to build on these skills. Although I still get frustrated trying to learn new programs I know that it is all worth it. The more I struggle the better informed I will be once its all over. End: Explain why your ideas changed or didnt change as a result of this class.

I have now gained the experience that I need to be a successful instructor using educational technology. As much as I have learned I recognized there is more knowledge to be gained. I want to continue to educate myself on any programming that will be useful to me and my students to advance them to reach our goal objectives. With practice I will be able to create comprehensive instructional plans that will be timeless and adapt for changing themes and topics. I feel this class was a great to start down the path to merit and excellence in the field of education.
