If you were to fill out your bracket based on which teams generated the most Facebook buzz over the last two weeks, here is what your bracket would look like: Duke, Notre Dame, Indiana and Michigan in the Final Four with Duke and Michigan advancing into the championship. And the winner based on overall mentions leading up to Selection Sunday? The Duke Blue Devils.
We tallied the total number of posts and comments containing words related to each school’s team that were made in the two weeks culminating in Selection Sunday. For the Social Bracket, the “winner” of each game was selected for having accrued a higher total number of mentions in that time frame.
For the top-mentioned Cinderella team, Minnesota Golden GophersDuke , we ranked the teams seeded 10th or higher and identified the one that had received the most mentions, also in the two weeks leading up to and including Selection Sunday. The Blue Devils were also the most talked about team on Selection Sunday, which was calculated only by posts and comments made on the day-of (3/17).
Michigan, the Most Improved Team, we looked at how many people had liked a team's Facebook Page between the start of the season (November 2012) and Selection Sunday and identified the one that grew the most.
