As you have discovered, finding the right School/Business Partner is essential to the success of the program. Just putting a business name down as a partner does no good. The give and take that goes on is the critical aspect. Exp. Record #: 11314 Date submitted: 10/09/2012 Elizabeth Hogan approved on 10/10/2012 Cohort: UEN 2011

Briefly describe this field-based internship experience, including your specific role (1/2 page). My role in this experience was 8th Grade Social Studies Teacher and 8th Grade Team Leader. In the Spring of 2012 John Deere Engine Works and Carver Middle School partnered up for the 2nd annual STEM field-trip day hosted by John Deere. The first annual was in Spring of 2011. I was on the team that organized the field trip and planned it out. When I attended the meeting I was one of the only school representatives present. I was asked a lot of side questions about the school and my personal experiences teaching there. I represented the school very well and talked about the exciting STEM classes we were hosting at the school. The representatives from John Deere were very interested in what our school was doing and I played a key role at strengthening the partnership. They wanted to know our progress on how we were teaching the middle school students and preparing them for careers in engineering and technology. Reflect on what you have learned from this experience, from mentor discussions, and how you will use this learning in future administrative leadership roles (no more than 1/2 page). I learned from the experience that when representing the school it is key and vital to represent the school in a very positive manner. I made sure to dress professionally and wore a school polo to show my support for where I was teaching. There were a lot of stakeholders involved in the planning and preparing for the field-trip. I was sure to work with the John Deere people in a very professional manner, and was quick to get back to them during the busy teaching days. Building these relationships and partnerships are key to getting support for your school. I will take this experience and use it in the future when I am searching for strong Partners in Education, and especially when choosing a representative from our school to work with the business professionals.
