Imagine that you have been asked to do a group research project about ________. The project will take 2-3 weeks. Research questions Brainstorm some questions you could ask about a particular aspect of the community (ex. Housing, land use, schools, etc.)

1. Do criminals do worse crimes once they get out of jail? 2. Does the longer the longer they stay in jail affect their personalities? 3. What type of crimes can get you into jail in Maple Ridge? 4. How many teenagers get into jail in Maple Ridge? 5. Whats the most common crime that gets you into prisin in Maple Ridge? 6. Do police officers catch the criminals 100% of the time or only occasionally 7. Is it more common to catch minor offense criminals or criminals who have commited serious crimes? 8. How might police officers help the criminals once theyre out of jail? 9. Who might we be able to talk to about our question? 10. If criminals have commited minor offenses, how might there be an alternative to jail?

11. How will criminals act once they are out of jail? 12. Once youve been to jail once, is it more common to come back to jail several times? 13. If you commit a minor offense and go to jail, could you be in contact with someone who has murdered another person? 14. How many crimes are commited in Maple Ridge by year? 15. Of all the crimes commited per year, how many crimes are serious offenses? 16. How can social workers help criminals from commiting crimes? 17. Of all the people that commit crimes, how many of them have mental problems? 18. Of all the people that commit crimes, how many are homeless, and might this affect the types of crimes they commit? 19. Of the people that go to jail, how many of them are under the influence of drugs or alchohol? 20. What is the most common crime commited in Maple Ridge?

Choose one question that will guide your research this is the question the final presentation would

How might going to jail help you learn from your mistakes?

answer. Tell why you chose your question.

We chose this question because we are all interested in how crimes in maple ridge affect the community and how we can help criminals. We want to find out why so many criminals are going to jail and if there could be other alternatives. We noticed that in our community there is a lot of crime so we wanted to find out if jail is preventing criminals from commiting crimes or if it could be encouraging them to commit more crimes.

Gathering Information What information facts and evidence -- will help you answer your question in a convincing way? How will you find that information? (Where will you look? What tools will you use?) How will you check to make sure your information/facts are accurate and useful?

We could talk to people who work in jails, prisons etc. and get their view on the question.

Ask various people what they think about our topic and see if they have any information on it.

We will look on various websites on the Internet such as Google. We will use it to be sure of our information that we have been told. Also to search up more information that we could use in our project.

We will check multiple sites to make sure that the information they have is accurate. We can ask different people the same questions to get multiple opinions on the same question.

We will ask people from We can our friends and our list of experts to tell us family who may have their opinions on our topic jobs involving this and questions. We will get reliable subject. information about Who can we talk to? our topic from We can check our facts Police officers: people and experts Police officers could tell us in books because since who work in this line how they catch criminals publishers decide

of subject matter. Well look up what people and experts told us to be sure that what we were told is true and also compare people and experts answers to see if they are similar.

and how often they have to arrest the same people. They could tell us whether or not once one person commits one crime he or she will be likely to commit another one. Parole officers: Parole officers could tell us what they do to help people stay out of trouble and tell us what kind of methods work for them. Prison guards: Prison guards could tell us how prisoners act in jail and whether or not it is difficult to handle the criminals in jail. They could also tell us how criminals react to being with different criminals. Family: They could tell us about their experience with having some sort of family member that is or was in jail and what kind of affect it has on their life.

whether or not to publish a book, books tend to be more trustworthy than certain websites. We can watch documentries about crime

How will you make sure you work together well as a team? Or how will you deal with problems that arise between group members

We can enourage the other people in our group to work hard. We can also work with the others and help them with what they are assigned to do.

Tools List any technology and other tools you will use.

List any new tools or skills you will need to learn?

Making your work interesting and unique. What could you do to make your project especially interesting and different from any other groups? (Think creatively!)

Presenting your findings and conclusions

Who might be interested in learning about your work?

We think police officers, prison guards, parole officers and even citizens might be interested. Maybe the parents or family/guardiens of criminals would care because they would want to help their children or family from avoiding jail and helping the community. People in the community would care if they live in an area where there is a lot of drunk driving. Criminals might care if they have commited minor offenses but are in jail with criminals who have commited serious offenses. Police Officers should care because thats what they should be working on and also other felonies. Also people that have already been in prison might agree that prison isnt always the solution to their crimes. Social workers that have to deal with criminals might get frustrated if they deal with the same criminal multiple times and the criminal is getting worse each time. We can have good and clear grammar so there are no misunderstandings. If we are presenting/ speaking we will have loud voices. We can make all the fonts and text really big and in a bold colour. We will use contrasting colours (reds on blacks ect.) instead of using light greens on other greens. If we use pictures that describe our subject than we

How could you present your work so others can clearly understand it?

wont have to use as many words.

What could you do to make your presentation memorable for your audience?

Use big pictures, bright colours, big fonts, interesting pictures and information. We can pick an interesting subject that is helpful to the community and not just a small group of people. If we have an interesting way of putting our presentation together than our audience will be interesting in listening to our conclusion.

On Your Own When your group has finished the plan, each student should write a short explanation about your planning activity. Tell:

Overall, how the planning activity went for your group How you contributed to the plan What parts of the plan you are most satisfied with Whether or not your would like to actually do this research and why
