Poetry Performance

Through poetry performance students can improve their writing and speaking skills. Tips when including poetry performance in the classroom: Establish an environment where learners feel safe to express themselves. Many students worry heavily about peer approval.

Remind students to read with expression. This will aid in increasing their fluency

Encourage students to include movement in their poetry performance. This will add to the voice of the poem.

Create a collaborative writing and performance assignment. This will benefit the childs by allowing them the further develop their social skills. Skills used in collaboration will be useful throughout life.

While reading poetry:


When reading poetry there are several things you can do to engage the learner.

Allow the students to hear the poem. Reading the poem with expression will allow the students to garner meaning.

Throughout poetry creation:


Encouragement
Writing poetry doesnt always come easy. Check on students efforts as they are writing. Provide encouragement and ways to improve as necessary.

Let students see poems. Poems can be written in many forms. Its important for students to be able to recognize that poetry can be accomplished in more ways than one.

Add movement to your reading. Movement is a form of expression and adds voice to your rendition of the poem

Have each student keep a poetry notebook. In the notebook they will keep poems they have created along with some of their favorite poems

Have a poetry writing conference with sever students at a time. The students will be able to help each other in their writing with the guidance of the teacher.

After reading poetry:


Discuss the poem. Have a classroom discussion in order to construct meaning out of the poem. The students will get to hear varying views and the teacher will be able to guide the learners and clear up any misconceptions.

Choice
Take a poetry notebook one step further by having each student keep a poetry log. In the log the will respond to poems read own their own an in class, taking note of the poems formula, poetic devices, and making connections between their work and the authors. Students who find writing difficult may find writing in a particular for difficult. Allow for the student to express themselves poetically in the form of their choice.

Create a graphic organizer or use a poetic formula for struggling writers. This will help them begin the writing process. Encourage them to stray from the formula or organizer.
