Shahrzad Sadrpour Technology Use Plan 2012-2017

Proposal: Redondo Beach Union High School (RBUHS) is seeking $40,000.00 for a five-year technology use plan to purchase and provide technology items including hardware, software, maintenance, professional development, and technical support in order to accomplish academic excellence and prepare students to become a knowledgeable individuals in the technology world. Plan Duration: The Technology Use Plan is a five-year plan from July 01, 2012 to July 01, 2017. It will serve as the main tool to provide support to our current technology plans, integrate technology to support teachers meet the curricular goals, and provide high quality learning environment for all students. Vision: Provide technology tools to our schools administrators and teachers to support their daily jobs and provide an equal opportunity to all students, including ones with special needs, to achieve academic mastery in their grade level. Rationale: Technology will be incorporated into the curriculum aligned with the California state standards to help students improve and achieve academic excellence in Language Arts and Mathematics literacy. State standards for grade levels 9-12: 3d1.1, 3d1.2, 3d2.1: Students will use technology resources for various projects to accelerate learning and improve research skills. 3d1.3-4, 3d2.2-3: Students will use technology tools for individual assignments or/and collaborative projects that meet curriculum goals. 3e1.1-1.4: Students will complete various activities through technology resources that establish proficiency in technology productivity tools and research skills. 3e2.1-4: Students will complete projects that incorporate appropriate grade level electronic research into the curricular areas. Goals for Five-Year Technology Use Plan In a research study The Impact of Technology on Student Achievement [conducted by ACOT Research, NCREL, Rockman ET AL, Missouris eMINTS Program, U.S. Department of Education, and The Endeavor Group Cupertino, CA] researchers have found that integrating technology in education allow educators to individualize curriculum and modify it to the needs of individual students so all students can learn better and achieve their potential. In addition, providing adequate technology tools motivates and engages students in learning, which can reduce absenteeism, decrease dropout rates, and motivate more students to pursue college degrees. Technology: Provide technology tools to administrators, teachers, and students to improve teaching methods and enhance learning to ensure all students meet the grade level state content standards.

Curriculum: Current use of technology: The school provides Microsoft based PCs and Apple Macintosh computers in classrooms, media center, and library. All computers have filtered access to the Internet, document sharing, and are licensed with Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Office Suite, and Internet Explorer. Each classroom is equipped with a Microsoft based PC with Internet connection, scanner, printer, and digital LCD projectors to assist teachers with their instructions. Depending on teachers preference and need, additional technology tools have been implemented in instructions and classroom activities such as: document cameras, wireless presentation devices, and televisions including DVD player. Special education educators have been supplied with laptop computers with access to various software packages in addition to the District standardized and supported software set. All students including general education and special education have regular access to computers in library and media center for conducting research and completing projects.

Curricular Goals: Our goal is to integrate the latest technology tools into curriculum to meet the gradelevel knowledge, skills, and the California Academic Content Standards. Incorporating technology in the curriculum allow students to access computers on a daily basis to develop new skills in support of the academic standards-based curriculum. Integrate technology into curriculum to promote collaborative teaching and learning. Provide professional development to help administrators and teachers meet a wide range of learning styles. Assist teachers with standard-based instructions. Help students gain the necessary skills in using technology to become knowledgeable individuals. Promote Digital Citizenship for teachers and students to achieve personal and professional goals. Provide technology tools to support academic achievement.

Collaboration: Our administrators and teachers will collaborate with other school districts, communities, and local business for partnership in order to get free workshops, training classes, technology support, and/or other funding that can be used in purchasing more technology supplies (hardware and software) and developing on-site staff development.

Our school is collaborating with the local adult school to provide professional training on technology skills and literacy skills for parents, teachers, and administrators. Teachers, administrators, and parents can access to various courses using Microsoft Office Professional Suite through local adult school.

Staff Development: Administrators and teachers need ongoing professional development training for general computer skills, intermediate level spreadsheets, presentation software, and database software. Additional training is needed in digital citizenship to support appropriate and ethical use of information technology in the classroom and Internet safety policies. Administrators and teachers will use Ed Tech Profile (www.edtechprofile.org/index.php), provided by the California Department of Education, for annual skills self-assessment surveys and certification. The school will provide an on-site professional Tech Leader on a monthly base to mentor and train administrators and teachers with technology use and learn different ways to plan and implement technology into curriculum. Many teachers have been certified and/or received their Masters in Technology and are capable and willing to provide regular or as needed training to their colleagues. Teachers and administrators can access various online courses available on the district website to improve necessary skills.

Resources: All students, including special education, have equal access to computers in library and media center during and after school hours.

Funding: During this five-year plan cycle, our school have anticipated to use established and potential funding sources to purchase, upgrade hardware and software, implement professional development and provide technical support to our teachers and administrators. Measure E is an established fund for modernizes our current and future infrastructure. EETT funding is an established fund available for staff professional development training. E-rate funding is an established fund available for Internet connectivity, telecommunication services, and internal connections. Site PTAs contribution is ongoing and available for equipment purchases. Business Partnership is a potential funding for supporting current and future hardware, software, licensing, and maintenance. Policies: Our school has developed policy and guidelines for administrators, teachers, and students when using technology during and after school hours. Hardware and software are available to all teachers and students during classroom instruction. Students can access computers, including assistive technology tools, during class, lunch, and after school hours to complete their assignments. Assistive technology tools (Hardware and software) can be loaned to students and parents upon schools permission. When teachers are not using technology tools during their class hours, both hardware and software will be available to administrators, parents, and students through media center and library.

Evaluation: Quarterly (March, June, September, December), our administrators, teachers, and the principal will collaborate to monitor, evaluate, examine, and analyze teacher/student surveys, assessment scores, and student achievement to ensure all technology tools are used effectively and identify necessary needs regarding the implementation of the plan. On a biennial basis, all teachers will complete the EdTechProfile Technology Assessment to measure and monitor personal and professional progress in the use of technology. Our school will use variety of evaluation tools to measure the effectiveness of our technology plan in order to maximize the individual students learning and achieve the grade level content standards. A yearly formal report will be shared with the district Executive and the Board of Education to demonstrate the progress.

Technology Acquisition: One Apple Learning Lab (15 MacBook Air laptops). These computers include: OS X Lion software; 64GB flash storage, 2GB memory 802.11n Wi-Fi wireless networking; DVD or CD Sharing; powered by a dual-core Intel Core i5 or i7 processor and DDR3 memory; USB 2.0; Thunderbolt; headphone port; Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor with 256MB; Stereo speakers; 45W MagSafe Power Adapter, AC wall plug, and power cord. A maximum of $16,500 is budgeted [$999x15=$14,985+tax] The Apple Learning Lab will be used primarily for English/Language arts and Graphic arts/Design classes on a daily basis for instruction and research or other information-processing activities. The lab will be available for other classes upon teachers need.

20 IPad (32 GB, Wi-Fi with VoiceOver and Zoom Accessibility). These IPads include: Safari; 5-megapixel iSight camera; HD video recording; iBooks; iTunes; Viewable document types: (images, Microsoft Word, web pages, Preview and Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft PowerPoint, rich text format, and Microsoft Excel); Full-screen zoom magnification; Assistive Touch interface for adaptive accessories; 32 Language support; 30-pin dock connector port; 3.5-mm stereo headphone; Built-in speaker; Microphone. A maximum of $13,000 is budgeted [$599x20=$11,980+tax] IPads are the hardware that our school is actively researching as a mobile tool for general education and special education classrooms to improve teaching and learning process. Teachers will integrate IPads and various apps during class instruction to create and adjust content upon students need to better demonstrate new topics and class objectives. Teachers will use IPads during class sessions to teach and practice math concepts using appropriate apps to work with numbers, formulas, and graphs to support a variety of math assignments. Teachers will use IPads for research-base projects using different apps such as iBooks, EBOOK combined with audio book reader, Desktop publishing tool, Google Docs, and Good Reader to support reading, writing, and speaking. Teachers will use IPads as a multipurpose curriculum access tool to provide grade level skill practice on all subjects to record and monitor student progress. Students will use IPads for in class group projects to create and share digital stories using recorded narration, text, images, and movies. IPads will be used as assistive technology tools for students with disabilities who receive instruction in special education classes. Student with disabilities will use Voiceover and Zoom, Out-of-the-box, Tap-to-talk, Screen-reading and other

features to interact directly with objects, collaborate with peers, communicate with teachers, and complete class activities. FileMaker Software: This is a productivity tool Software for teachers and administrators to create, manage, and archive individual student plans, IEP process, and restructure special education procedures. A maximum of $550 is budgeted [$499x1=$499+tax] To better meet the needs of students and expectations of parents our administrators and teachers will use this productivity tool software during the school year to create and manage more powerful and flexible database applications. Administrators and teachers will use this program to design curriculum-mapping systems; archive curriculum units; use the built-in layout themes to create lesson plans and homework that are grade level appropriate and meet the California State content standards; collect and modify data for course development; monitor and process student improvement reports on a monthly basis; track and report students grades and attendance. Teachers can access to this program from their iPhone or iPad to store and share texts, pictures, and videos with their students during instruction.
