Strategies for resolving conflict

COLLOBRATING: This technique is considered to be the most positive technique available for conflict resolution because it emphasizes the attaining of the common interests of both conflicting parties. In mutual problem solving process, the conflicting parties must come together with the responsibilities of solving the mutual problem that faces rather than merely finding a way to accommodate their different perspectives. Questions of who is right or wrong are generally avoided, but sharing and communicating are required in order to find areas of common interest. This technique can be applied effectively where conflict is based on misunderstanding of the parties concerned.

Avoidance: another method of overcoming conflict is its avoidance, that is, parties to the conflict may either withdraw from the conflict or try to just ignore a conflict and avoiding others with whom you disagree. Accommodating: the accommodative style is low in assertiveness and high on cooperativeness. Parties will be generous and self sacrificing. The emphasis is on the common interest of the conflicting groups and de-emphasis on their differences.

Competing: the competitive style is high on assertiveness, and low on co-operativeness. In this style one party tries to satisfy his own self, ignoring the interest of the other party. Each blames the other for problem. Compromise: This is a traditional method of resolving conflicts. There is no distinct winner or looser because each party is expected to give up something of value. It is commonly used where the conflict involves differences in goals, attitudes or values. In this style
