February 7, 2013 GISC9305-D1 Mike Wallace Niagara-on-the-lake Campus, Niagara College Room E301 135 Taylor Road, S.S #4 On, L0S 1J0 Dear: Mike Wallace: Re: Submission of GISC9305-D1

Please accept this letter as formal submission of Deliverable 1:CAD and GIS Mapping Standards for GISC9305 CAD and GIS. For this assignment, students were to gain familiarity with the AutoCAD Map 3D program. While completing the assignment with the AutoCAD Map 3D program students learned definitions to different CAD and Mapping Standards. In the program students will learn to create and assign the object classes themselves. Please do not hesitate to contact me for any additional information at 1-416-5098070. Thank you for your time and attention. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Brooke Le Blanc GIS-GM Graduate Candidate B.L Enclosures: 1.) GISC9305 Deliverable 1: CAD and GIS Mapping Standards

Brookes GIS World

Abstract The first assignment for the CAD and GIS course is dealing directly with mapping standards in the AutoCAD program. This knowledge along with a combination of other skills that we have been learning throughout the first semester will help us to complete this assignment to our full potential. Having the ability to follow a set of standards is a skill that will also benefit us when we go out into the work force and adapt to whatever existing standards that a company has.

Background To complete this assignment we were given a pre-existing CAD drawing. Our goal was to work with the standards given to us to standardize and clean up the file. We then were to define all of the Data Standards and describe how they would more specifically be defined in our own specific GIS company.

Define and Describe the Data Standards Software Brookes GIS World will be dealing directly with the AutoCAD 2010 when working on any map/drawing to be completed. The company will do its best to remain updated with the newest version of this program. By consistently using the same program for its maps/drawings employees will have the ability and skills to use the File Naming Convention
Naming conventions are important to have standardized because it makes it a lot easier to find any kind of map/document that someone may be trying to find with minimal effort and confusion. For Brookes GIS World All files must start with the date and then be followed by the name of the project and version number. For example 09/07/2013ShortHills1.

Text styles The text styles for Brookes GIS World will be the same as the standard text styles for AutoCAD. It is important to define text styles because all maps/drawings from Brookes GIS world will appear uniform and professional regardless of the author.

Any text written on a map/drawing should not take away from the central focus of the map/drawing. It should only be used to help aid in its explanation Text Name, Style, and Size Text Style Name Text12 Text14 Text16 Text18 Text20 Text12B Text14B Text16B Text18B Text20B Text22B Text24B Text26B Style Regular Regular Regular Regular Regular Bold Bold Bold Bold Bold Bold Bold Bold Font Arial Arial Arial Arial Arial Cambria (Body) Cambria (Body) Cambria (Body) Cambria (Body) Cambria (Body) Cambria (Body) Cambria (Body) Cambria

Symbology
Symbology on maps is when pictures or symbols are used to identify and describe something that is desired to be displayed. For Brookes GIS World all symbols must be identified in a legend located somewhere on the map. The symbols themselves must not be too distracting and large, they are only to be used to aid in the understanding of the map.

Metadata Metadata can be defined as the description of a specific type of data that helps the person working with the data to fully understand its capabilities. Metadata is necessary for all of the maps and drawings at Brookes GIS World. The necessary fields of metadata are: Metadata Field Title Title File Name Type Drawing Status Jurisdiction Date Project Number Description Necessary for desired field The title of the map/drawing The file name that the map/drawing is saved as The specific type of map/drawing If the map is considered to be complete or in progress Name of one who has control over the project Date the map/drawing was completed The number of the project

Map/Drawing Number Municipal Reference Number Author Version Last Revision Date Last Revision Description Content Projections Used Scale External References Building Coordinates Approvals

The map/drawing number The municipal reference number The name of the person who created the map/drawing The number of the version of the map/drawing The date of the last time the map/drawing had been edited. Description of what the last revision was Keywords to describe the map/drawing The projection used for the map/drawing The scale of the map/drawing Where the data for the map/drawing came from UTM NAD 83 northing/easting value for the upper right and lower left corners of the map/drawing Information on any approvals for the project

Topology rules (clean-up standards)

Topology rules are important to standards in a company because it is important to make sure that all map/drawings are created to their full potential. The cleaning up process helps to make drawings better than manually possibly. For Brookes GIS worlds clean up standards require all duplicates to be deleted, zero length objects and weed polylines.

Quality assurance and control procedures,

Brookes GIS World

All maps maps/drawings made by Brookes GIS world should consist of the following quality assurance and control procedures before they can be deemed complete: -Data Standard (Ensuring all data that is included in the map/drawings in correctly and correctly sourced) -Data file standards (That the map/drawings themselves are named and formatted

Conclusion This assignment was a great learning experience when dealing with AutoCAD standards that have already been set in place. This assignment also allowed us to actively think about the different elements of mapping standards and consider what we feel would be the most beneficial aspects to have in our standards. This assignment will help us in the working world because it will allow us to easily adapt to AutoCAD standards that have been previously set by the company that we will be working for.
