Community and Service

This area of interaction allows you to consider how you engage with your immediate family, classmates and friends in the outside world as a member of these communities. Through different activities, you can learn about your place within these communities and be motivated to act in a new context.

Your reflection on Community and service Create an overview of your commitment to community service so far this year. Include a description of the activities in which you are involved. Explain how these experiences have affected you and impacted others. I am very committed to completing community service. I have already volunteered at Les Floralies home for the elderly. I helped give them their food, drinks and whatever else they might need. I was also involved in a chair exercise activity and the patients seemed to really enjoy our involvement. It felt great to be able to add a little fun and excitement to their day. I enjoyed meeting new people and I think they enjoyed having us there also.

Health and Social Education

This area of interaction delves into the range of human issues that exists in human societies, such as social structures, relationships and health. During the five years of the programme, this AOI will help you to find out how these issues affect societies, communities and individuals, including yourself. Through the area of health and social education, you can identify and develop skills that will enable you to function as effective member of societies, as well as learning about how you are changing and how to make informed decisions that may relate to your welfare.

Reflection on this AOI Which health and social issues affect my age group? How were they approached so far this year in the school? A major social issue affecting my age group is BULLYING. Many students are being bullied in many different ways: I:e: name calling, cyber-bullying, pushing etc This is a really big problem and it happens on a regular basis. The school has implemented discussions with the students involved. A health issue affecting my age group is drug use. Police officers came by to make us aware how drug use affects us and ruins our lives.

Which other issue(s) should be addressed in this school for your group age? Why do you think so? Another issue should be smoking. Some secondary 1 students have already been caught smoking on school grounds. Unfortunately, this problem is still going on even though they have been warned to stop.

Environments
This area of interaction considers how human interact with the world at large and the parts we play in our environments. It extends into areas beyond human issues and asks students to examine the interrelationships of different environments. Both immediate classroom environments and global environments are to be considered.

Reflection on this AOI How did I affect my environments this year? How did my environments affect me? I recycle both in the classroom and at home. I am trying my best to be aware of the environment and play my part in the prevention of global warming. I feel both confused and unhappy when the environment around me is messy and disorganized.

Human ingenuity
This AOI deals with the way in which human minds have influenced the world, for example, the way we are, think, interact with each other, create, find solutions to and cause problems, transform ideas and rationalize thought. It also considers the consequences of human thought and action.

Reflection on this AOI What have I created this year in school that I am the most proud of? Why is it so? This year I created a science project showing the effect of a lunar eclipse. I made a model of a lunar eclipse. I was proud of it because the model was a working model that turned and showed the lunar and solar eclipse.

PART B: Your pieces of work

In all the pieces of work that you have included in your portfolio, chose one of them in order to answer the following questions. Piece of work chosen: _lunar and solar eclipse_____________________________
How this chosen piece of work relate to the Areas of Interaction? For this project, my partner and I had to get together and take pictures of each step involved. We worked closely together and we had to get along well in order to complete the project properly. Because we interacted properly and had respect for each other, we were successful in achieving a great mark.

What do you think you have learned while working on this assignment? I was already familiar with the solar and lunar eclipse, but I got a visual experience by creating a model. I also learned how to work well and efficiently with my classmate.

Why are you proud of this piece of work?

This was the first project I had to complete in sec.1 and I proved to myself that even though I am in high school, I am able to achieve my goals by getting a great mark.

PART C: Learner profile

Reflection on the IB learner profile

Chose the two attributes that you feel that you developed the best so far this year. Explain why you picked these two attributes and how you demonstrated them so far this year. One attribute is inquirer. I enjoy learning new things and I am not afraid to ask questions when I am not sure how to complete assignments or projects. I am curious about things that are around me and I am happy to figure out how to solve problems. The second attribute is balanced. I am very involved in sports as well as working very hard to achieve my academic goals. I play inter-city soccer and have been playing it for 4 years. I am involved in the yearbook committee and have joined the school soccer team. I enjoy being involved in many different things because I get to have lots of opportunities and meet many different people.

Chose two attributes that you feel that you need to develop for the rest of this year. Explain why you picked these two attributes and how you will work on them for the rest of this year. Reflective so that I can be aware of my strengths and weaknesses to get better marks. I will try to be more aware of what I am doing on a daily basis. Risk-taker because I am too timid and shy when I am not certain of things and I want to be more confident in myself. I will try to over-come my shyness and be more assertive to complete my goals.
