Problem Set #10

Read: 21.4, 21.5, 22.1 – 22.4, 23.1 and then do the problems. Due on Friday, October 31.
1) Two plane mirrors are oriented with an angle of 120° spotlight
between them. See diagram. A light ray is incident on Mirror
#1 at an angle of 65°. Calculate the angle, θ, at which it
leaves Mirror #2. 2.5 m

5) A point source of light is submerged 2.2 m below the surface
2) When in California, Skid listens to The Arrow at 107.1 MHz. of a swimming pool. The light source emits light in all

source, a circular area is illuminated. What is the maximum
3) A classroom window is made from a piece of flint glass that is radius of this circle?
4 mm thick. How long does it take light to pass through the
glass? 6) The distance from a concave mirror to its focal point is 30
cm. An object is placed 45 cm from the mirror. a) Draw a
Light Ray Diagram for this situation, b) Calculate the
image distance and the magnification, c) Describe the
state of the image (real/virtual, upright/inverted,
bigger/smaller).

7) The radius of curvature for a convex mirror is 20 cm. An

object is placed 30 cm from the mirror. a) Draw a Light Ray
Diagram for this situation, b) Calculate the image distance
and the magnification, c) Describe the state of the image
(real/virtual, upright/inverted, bigger/smaller).

ANSWERS:
1) 55°
2) 2.8 m
3) 2.21 x 10-11 s
4) 12.1 m
5) 2.5 m
6) b) 90 cm, -2
7) b) -7.5 cm, 0.25

4) Mitch and Skid are out hunting sharks in their boat. While
drunk, Skid drops Mitch’s lucky guitar pick into the water.
They use the spotlight to try to locate it before Mitch forces
Skid into the shark infested waters to retrieve it. See
diagram. Determine the distance, d, which is the distance
from the edge of the boat to the location of the guitar pick.
