International conference for information society and the elderly:
Global perspectives
The Center for Social Welfare Research at Yonsei University
February 2008 Seoul
The idea
August 3, 1998 we have organized a meeting in Milano, Italy: “The
new elderly people and the city, scenery, perspectives and
resources”.
In Italy at that date we had nationwide more than ten millions of
people more than 65 years old (17%) and the population was going to
become older and older due to the continuous improvement of life
expectancy. In 1951 only 12,1% of t he Italian population was more
than 60 years old, in 1987 the same figure was 19.4%, and the

projection pointed to a value of 30% in 2014: 16 million!
Milano is an old people city: in 1998 we had 373.000 people over 65:
that is 27.86% of the population, much more than the nation value.
Digital divide was very severe among the elderly part of the
population and most of them cannot have all the benefits that being
an IT literate cane give us today.
AIM decided to evaluate the possibility of an initiative to help
grandfathers to overcome this problem.
The method
The main basic ideas that emerged during the project declination
phase where:
Overcome the
teenagers only
allure of the network
using an inter
generational knowledge transfer approach between the two groups:
knowledge sharing has proofed to be a very good instrument for
building relations.
Is interesting to remember that twice in the history young people
have taught something to their parents: the first one was during the
early phase of United States immigration wave, children learned
English language at school and parents learned it from their
children, the second time came with the Internet!
The course has to be very fast in the first phases in order not to
loose interest and attention: the less theory and the more practical
navigation the better!
Set up a fast
net only
course.
The network has some advantages over a
generic computer approach:
• The web has a very low entrance barrier: you learn to use
few buttons and you may begin immediate navigation.
• The WEB has infinite variety of content: anybody may find
something interesting from the very first beginning
• EMAIL, the Internet killer application, becomes very
important in the third age when families are often
dispersed, friends moved away and the need for easy contact
becomes a key factor.
• Today elderly persons where not exposed, or had a very
light exposure, to computer technologies in their working
environment. Often they have fear of technology, they
consider it useless or extremely difficult, they developed
the idea that the net may be dangerous and in an
environment where a mistake can be an heavy problem. The
protected hands on approach can very easily overcome those
wrong ideas. What they need is a friendly, non competitive,
free of charge environment!
Taking advantages of a positive feedback
A key factor of success in this initiative is to be very fast in the
implementation: it is difficult to predict in advance what will be
the best mechanism, it is better to begin immediately and to correct
the action via a trial and error mechanism.
Gaining in visibility you can get more sponsor. At the beginning the
best idea is to keep it simple and keep costs marginal. The
experience all over Italy as indicated a large need of elderly people
Internet alphabetization: number of enrolled customer has been always
pretty large, having large number you gain visibility and having more
fundings you can go back and set up a larger and better tuned offer
in a positive feedback virtuous circle!
Media and mouthtomouth messages are the key factor to get the
higher visibility you can.
Potential sponsors are:
• companies interested in selling products and in image
• local and central governmental institutions interested in
good reputation and votes
• It is extremely important to get sponsors with a real long
lasting commitment.
The distance between dreams and reality is a method!
The method you need must be:
● well defined
● scalable to larger numbers of enrolled people
● adaptable to the local situation
Other notes after our 7 years experience
Statistical analysis over large numbers shows an equal amount of
female and male and a large variety of social classes, education and
past job experiences.
The most important part of tutor's training is not technical. You
must teach them how to manage the relationship with customers:
comprehension and love are among the most important factors.
An extremely important phase is the launch event.
Internet saloon: the gymnasium
In addition to courses we have organized a gymnasium: a bunch of
computer to practice.
Various reasons push people to the gymnasium:
● not having a PC home
● practice and go deeper with some assistance from tutors
● not being alone.
Some of our customer will disappear after the course and we will
never know if they are in the Internet or not, but some of them will
be kept connected to AIM via the Gymnasium and the availability of a
place where spend some time chatting with other about their
experiences is an important asset for them.
Is very important to stress the fact that the gymnasium is not only a
place with some computers connected to the network. It should be a
controlled environment and it needs some skilled assistants to be
always available.
The number of computer in the gymnasium will never be enough!
Another good use of gymnasium is give some practice opportunity
between a first one day basic course and the advanced training second
day: a good idea is to leave something like 15 days interval.
After the course some of the people disappear, but many of them love
to get into a sort of community. You can make a good use of this
community organizing:
social activities like Christmas parties, feasts and tours
further courses: word, excel, digital image taking, blogging...
