COURSE OVERVIEW: The goal of the High School Health and Wellness Course is to empower students to develop and requisite knowledge, skills and attitude so that they may develop and maintain lifelong health and wellness. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students will complete the online health course and will be able to: 1. Demonstrate ways in which they can enhance and maintain their health and well being 2. Understand and demonstrate behaviors that prevent disease and speed recovery from illness 3. Practice behaviors that reduce the risk of becoming involved in potentially dangerous situations in ways that help to protect their health. 4. Understand and demonstrate how to promote positive health practice within the community and other settings including how to cultivate positive relationships with peers 5. Understand and demonstrate how to play a positive, active role in promoting health of families 6. Understand the variety of physical, mental, emotional, and social changes that occur throughout life 7. Understand and accept individual differences in growth and development 8. Understand their developing sexuality, students will learn about protecting their sexual health and choosing sexual abstinence 9. Identify information, products, and services that maybe helpful or harmful to their health. LENGTH OF COURSE: 20 weeks COMMUNICATION: Students may email the instructor whenever they feel necessary. Emails will be returned within a 24 hour period, no later. Communication is required during the class in discussion posts which will vary from subject to subject and, will be clearly stated on the unit road map. Students must have an intellectually constructed response that refrains from the use of language or racial slurs. Your success depends upon your attitude and responsible participation in class. Consequences for not Participating in class or having work done on time: 1. Verbal warning via email 2. Phone call or web chat with student and parent 3. Meeting/conference call with parent, administration and teacher

TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS: a. Reliable computer with internet connection b. A notebook that allows you to take notes from lectures if needed c. Adobe flash (PDF reader) installed onto computer d. Google Drive downloaded and an account created e. Web-cam or a means to video chat with instructor (once a week) f. Windows media player/Mac media player COURSE REQUIREMENTS: All work must be submitted on time and completed to the best of the students ability. A web chat is required between student and parent/guardian every other week for the duration of the course. Late work will be accepted. The first day late after a due date instructor will deduct 20%, the second day late after a due date instructor will deduct 40 % and the third day after a due date the student will receive no credit. I do NOT advise using this policy. You should make your best efforts to meet all due dates. If you are unable to the instructor expects an email prior to the due date, however this may not excuse your late work. EVALUATION PROCEDURES: Your grade will be a composite of discussion posts ( 10pts ea), research projects (10-30 pts ea) lecture/reading reflections (10-15 pts ea) 8-Current events papers (15 pts ea) Chapter test (30 pt ea) and End of the semester Final Exam. Each of these items will have a certain number of points assigned as a value. The number of points that you have earned compared to the total number of points that were possible will determine your grade. There will be a final exam at the end of the quarter worth 15% of your final grade. You and your parent will receive a progress report every Friday via email. This will list your grade on all assignments and any missing assignments. Once you have reviewed your progress report you will need to schedule time to discuss your progress with your teacher and parent every other week. I follow the grading scale below: A 100-95% A- 94-90% B+ 89-87% B 86-85% BC+ C C84-80% 79-77% 76-75% 74-75% C 79%-68% D+ 69-67% D 66-65% D- 66-60% E 59% or below (no credit)

How to improve grade: 1. Ask questions in class to clarify concepts. 2. When needed, make an appointment to web chat or call your teacher. 3. Turn in all assignments on time. 4. Stay organized.
