Homework 1 1. Find the stopping sight distance for a design speed of 65 kmph. Assume suitable data. What are sight distance requirements at a grade of 1 in 40? 2. The speeds of overtaking and overtaken vehicle are 80 and 60 kmph respectively. If the overtaking vehicle requires 10 second for overtaking maneuver, excluding reaction time, calculate the safe passing distance for a. One way traffic (single lane road, except at overtaking zones) b. Two way traffic (The design speed of opposing traffic is 70 kmph) 3. A radius of 250 m has to be provided at a locality due to site restrictions on a National Highway with design speed 100 kmph. Design the super-elevation. Should there be restriction in speed? 4. Calculate super-elevation to be provided for a horizontal curve of radius 50 m for a design speed of 40 kmph in snowbound hilly terrain. What is the maximum superelevation that can be provided and what will be coefficient of friction then? Is the design safe? If it is not safe what remedy do you suggest?

Homework 2 1. Calculate safe driving speed on a curve of radius 300 m and having super elevation of 0.07. Assume suitable values of friction. If the pavement is 7 m wide, how much should the outer edge to be raised if super-elevation is provided by rotating about the inner edge? 2. Prepare a table giving chords and deflection angle for staking out a 480 radius circular curve with a total deflection angle 22. The TC point is at station 10 + 32. Give deflection angles and chords at 20 meters intervals, including full stations. 3. The stopping sight distance required for a highway is 80 m. Find the required clearance of obstruction from the centre line of a circular curve of radius 350 m assuming the length of the curve is greater than the sight distance. 4. A vertical summit curve is formed when an ascending gradient of 1 in 25 meets another ascending gradient of 1 in 100. Find the length of the summit curve to provide required stopping sight distance for a design speed of 80 kmph.
