LESSON PLAN 13 INTERMEDIATE GROUP TUE 18 June 2013

Unit: World Travel/World Wonders


Objectives: 1. Students will be able to recognize and utilize appropriate vocabulary to describe particular situations pertaining to travel. 2. Students will be able to read and describe an itinerary utilizing prior knowledge and knew vocabulary. 3. Students will be able to describe their future travel and holiday plans.

Vocabulary: book (a flight, passage), layover, arrival, departure, journey, customs, frequent flyer miles, baggage, check-in, itinerary Grammar: Will Future, Going to Future and Simple Present future tenses Functions: Describe travel, utilize an itinerary, and explain future plans

Materials: Online: PowerPoint 618 Grammar in Context book 3 World Link book 3 Handout A- Vocabulary Handout B- Andres Itinerary Handout C 4th of July

Warm-up (5 Min) Ask the students if they enjoy travelling. Ask them if they have visited other
countries besides the United States. Ask them about when they arrived to the United States, and if it was difficult for them to find their way around.

TRANSITION We have all been to another country besides our home-country. Lets talk about some things that we need to know when we travel.

Activity 1 Vocabulary Introduction (25 Min.)


Objectives: Students will be able to recognize and utilize appropriate vocabulary to describe particular situations pertaining to travel. A. PRE - BRAINSTORM (10 Min) 1) Ask the students to get into pairs and think about what kinds of words and vocabulary they needed (or need) to know to be able to travel internationally. 2) Once they have finished brainstorming the vocabulary, provide each student with the vocabulary handout and go over what they have come up with as a class. Write the verbs not on the vocabulary handout on the board for future reference.

B. WITHIN - VOCABULARY EXERCISE (15 Min) 1) Open the PowerPoint for todays lesson and show the pictures that correspond to the vocabulary terms. Ask the students to work together to identify the picture that matches the terms. (give the students ~30 seconds each picture) C. POST - (5 Min) 1) Ask the students if the activity was difficult. 2) Go over each picture, asking a student to provide the answer.

TRANSITION Now that we have some of the vocabulary items we need to talk about traveling, lets take a look at Andres Itinerary.

Activity 2 Itinerary Activity (20 Min.)


Objective: Students will practice using the vocabulary to describe Andres schedule, and become familiar with an itinerary

A. PRE (5 Min) 1) Explain to students about what we use itineraries for. Ask them if they have used them before. 2) Provide each student a copy of Andres Itinerary (Handout B Itinerary activity). Ask them to look over it briefly. Ask if they have any questions about it.

B. WITHIN (10 Min) 1) Within Handout B there is a travel itinerary, along with an activity for the students to complete. They will input the proper vocabulary terms for the blank spaces for the summary of Andres itinerary. 2) Ask the students to refer back to the vocabulary we just discussed to complete the handout.

C. POST - (5 Min) 1) Go over the correct answers for the handout as a class. 2) Ask the students if they have any further questions about the vocabulary or itineraries.

TRANSITION Now that we have an understanding of an itinerary, lets talk about how we can describe our future plans.

Activity 3 Future Tenses Holiday (25 Min.)


Objective: Students will be able to identify usage of the future tense and be able to produce it correctly to describe future plans.

A. PRE 1) Ask students to look at the verb tenses used in Andres Itinerary summary. Ask them what kind of tense is being used. Ask about when we use certain future tenses. 2) Use the PowerPoint to explain the different future tenses, along with providing examples. 3) Ask students about the closest holiday to today (4th of July) 4) Ask students if they know what the 4th of July is about 5) Provide each student with Handout C- 4th of July

B. WITHIN 4th of July plans (or other holidays) 1) Each student will receive various statements about what someone will be doing for their 4th of July holiday. 2) With their partner, they will take turns making statements in one of the future tenses. Their partner will need to say which tense is being used.

C. POST 1) Go over the correct answers for the statements as a class. 2) Ask each student something that they will be doing on the 4th of July this year. (If they do not know, ask them to make something up. )

TRANSITION We have talked about how to describe our future plans, so now lets put what we have learned into good use.

Wrap-Up Homework Assignment (or extra activity)


Objective: The students will practice using the future tenses to describe what they will do on a future date D. PRE 1) Ask the students to think about what kinds of places they will travel to (or would like to travel to) this year. 2) Ask them to write the places down that they will visit. (or have them think of them for tomorrow) E. WITHIN Travel Plans 1) Ask the students to write 4 statements using the future tenses to describe their future plans.

F. POST 1) Ask the students where they plan on visiting. Have them share their statements with the class. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Assessment 1) Teacher can assess the students understanding of vocabulary through answers provided verbally and on Handout A. 2) Teacher may assess the students understanding of itinerary through their provision of answers orally and responses on handout B. 3) Teacher can assess the students understanding of the future tenses through monitoring during the speaking activity along with checking statements provided by the students in class and on the homework. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Potential Problems1) Students may have trouble distinguishing between situations when certain future tenses can be used this will hopefully be curtailed through the provision of multiple examples for each tense. 2) Technical difficulties may inhibit the use of the PowerPoint Multiple handouts will be provided to help decrease reliance on it. 3) Some students may have not had much experience with travel Effort will be made to encourage students to think of what they would like to do, not just what they have done or know they will do. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------5
