Installation in Windows
ToinstalltheKROMEEditorandtheKROMEPlugInEditorintoWindowsXP,Windows VistaorWindows7proceedasfollows. IfyouwanttoconnecttheKROMEtoyourcomputerviaUSBandusetheKROME EditorandtheKROMEPlugInEditor,youmustinstalltheKorgUSBMIDIDriver.

Note: Use the KORG USBMIDI Driver Tools (download required) to install the KORG USB MIDIDriver.YoucandownloadthelatestversionfromtheKorgwebsite.

StarttheinstallerthatyoudownloadedfromtheKorgwebsiteandfollowtheon screeninstructionstoinstalltheKORGUSBMIDIDriverToolssoftwareonyour computer. ToinstalltheKORGUSBMIDIDriver,checktheinstallationprocedurethatis describedintheKORGUSBMIDIDriverToolsinstallationmanual(HTML). Todisplaytheinstallationmanual,select[Start][AllPrograms][KORG] [KORGUSBMIDIDriverTools][InstallationManual]fromthetaskbar. ConnectthecomputerUSBportandtheKROMEUSBportwithaUSBcable,andthen turnonthepoweroftheKROME. WhenyourcomputerfirstrecognizestheconnectiontotheKROME,theWindows defaultdriverswillbeautomaticallyinstalled.However,thisdriverisnottheKORG USBMIDIDriverandyouwillnotbeabletobeusetheKROMEwiththisdriver.

Note: For Window XP and Windows Vista, the installation of a driver is required for each USBport.IftheKORGUSBMIDIDriverisinstalledtoanincorrectUSBportandthe KROMEisconnected,reinstalltheKORGUSBMIDIDriverinthesamemanner.

AftertheinstallationoftheWindowsstandarddriveriscomplete,theKORGDriver SetupUtilitywillstartupautomaticallysobesuretofollowtheonscreeninstructions toinstalltheKORGUSBMIDIDriver. IftheThedriverdidntpassWindowsLogotestmessagefordigitalsignatures appearsduringtheinstallation,clickthe[Continue]buttontocontinue. Aftertheinstallationiscompleteandyouareaskedtorestartyourcomputer,clickthe [Yes]buttontorestartyourcomputer.

About the KROME and USB-MIDI driver port


KEYBOARD Port
UsethisporttoreceivetheKROMEMIDImessages(KROMEkeyboardandcontrollerdata) withacomputerapplication.

UsethisporttosendtheMIDImessagefromthecomputerapplicationtotheKROMEandto producesoundswiththeKROMEsinternalinstruments.

TheKROMEEditor/PlugInEditorInstallerwillappear. SuccessivelyselectandinstalltheEditor(Standalone),PlugInEditor(VST),and/or PlugInEditor(RTAS)asdesired. Forexample,ifyouwanttoinstallthestandaloneversion,click[InstallStandalone Application].

TheKROMEEditorscreenwillappear.Click[Next>]. TheWelcometotheKROMEEditorsetupwizardscreenwillappear.Click[Next>]. TheKROMEEditorinformationwillappear.Readthedisplayedcontent,andclick [Next>]. TheLicenseagreementwillappear.Carefullyreadthecontents,andifyouagree, checkIacceptthetermsofthelicenseagreementandclick[Next>]. TheSelectinstallationfolderscreenwillappear.Choosethelocationanduser(s)for whichyouwanttoinstallthesoftware,andclick[Next>].

Verifyinstallationwillappear.Toproceedwiththeinstallation,click[Next>]. Installationwillbegin.

Iftheinstallationwassuccessful,click[Close]. TheKROMEEditor/PlugInEditorInstallerwillappear. Nextyouwillinstallthepluginversion(s)thatyouwanttouse.Usingtheprocedure thatsdescribedabove,beginwithstep1andinstallthepluginversion(s)thatyou wanttouse. IfyoudontwanttoinstalltheVSTpluginversionortheRTASpluginversion,click [ExitSetup]toendtheinstallation. Whenyouvefinishedinstallingtheapplication(s)thatyouwant,click[ExitSetup]to exittheinstaller.

Doubleclick[KROMEEditorInstaller.pkg]inthe[KROMEEditor]foldertostartup theinstaller. DependingontheversionofyourMacsoperatingsystem,aconfirmationdialogbox mayappearatthispoint.Ifso,enteryourpasswordandclick[OK].Whentheinstaller startsup,thefollowingscreenwillappear.Click[Continue].

Importantinformationwillappear.Readthecontents,andclick[Continue]. TheLicenseagreementwillappear.Carefullyreadthecontents,andclick? [Continue].Adialogboxwillaskwhetheryouacceptthetermsofthelicense agreement.Ifyouaccept,click[Agree]. AscreenallowingyoutochoosetheInstallationdestinationwillappear.Choosethe installationdestinationandclick[Continue]. TheStandardInstallationdialogboxwillappear.Click[Install].

DependingontheversionofyourMacsoperatingsystem,aconfirmationdialogbox mayappearatthispoint.Ifso,enteryourpasswordandclick[OK]. Whentheinstallationhasbeensuccessfullycompleted,click[Restart]toexitthe installer. YoucantconnecttwoormoreKROMEunitstoasinglecomputerandusethem simultaneously.

Note: UnderMacOSX,thepluginversionwillalsobeinstalledintheappropriatefolder.

Setup
KROME setup
IfyouwanttousetheKROMEEditorwiththeKROMEconnectedtoyourcomputervia USB,youmustmakesurethatyouhavefinishedinstallingandsettinguptheKORG USBMIDIDriverbeforeyoustartuptheKROMEEditor.

UseaUSBcabletoconnecttheKROMEsUSBconnectortotheUSBportofyour computer. IntheKROMEsGlobalmode,makesurethatMIDIFilterEnableExclusiveissetto on(thecheckboxshouldbechecked).(Thefactorysettingison.)

StartuptheKROMEEditorandverifythatitsoperatingcorrectly.

Starting up the KROME Editor
NavigatetotheKORGfolderKROMEfolder,anddoubleclicktheKROMEEdi tor.exeicon. TheKORGfolderisinthelocationthatyouselectedduringinstallation.Bydefaultitsin theProgramFilesfolder. Alternatively,youcanstartuptheeditorbyclickingthetaskbar[Start]button[AllPro grams]andthenpointingtoKORGKROMEKROMEEditor.

Mac OS X

KROME Plug-In Editor setup


IfyouwanttousetheKROMEEditorwiththeKROMEconnectedtoyourcomputervia USB,youmustmakesurethatyouhavefinishedinstallingandsettinguptheKORG USBMIDIDriverbeforeyoustartuptheKROMEEditor. ThissectionexplainshowtosetuptheKROMEPlugInEditorinyourhostapplicationand adjustthesettingssothatitwillfunctioncorrectly.Adjustthesesettingsasappropriatefor yoursystemandsetup.

About the KROME Plug-In Editor


TheKROMEPlugInEditorsendsandreceivesparameterdatatoandfromtheKROME. Unliketypicalplugininstruments,theKROMEPlugInEditordoesnotproduceanaudio signal. YourKROMEwilloutputaudiosignalswhentheKROMEPlugInEditorsendsitMIDImes sages. IfyouwanttosendtheKROMEsaudiosignaltoanaudiotrackinyourhostapplicationand useitinconjunctionwithaplugineffectetc.,refertoUsingyourhostapplicationtocontrol theKROMEsaudiosignal(seep.9).

Tochangethearpeggiatorpattern,changetheArpeggiatorPatternonthe[ARP]tabin thecenterofthescreen. Whilelettingthearpeggiatorplay,movethefourknobsortheknobsoftheKROME itself,andnoticehowthearpeggiochanges. AtthetopofthePlaypage,youcancheckthecurrentvalueofatypicalparameterin theProgrammode.ThisOverviewdisplaystheparametersforeachsection.Ifyou clickasectionname(PitchEGandFilter1EG)ofeachparameter,youcan automaticallyjumptothepage/tabtoedittheapplicableparameter.

Whenyouwanttoperformdetailedediting,youcanswitchtootherpagesandtabstoaccess thedesiredparameters. Globalmodeisdividedintoseparatepageswhereyoucaneditdrumkits,categorynames, andscales(temperaments).Selectthedesiredpage(ortab),andeditthesettings. Toselectapage,clickthetabforthedesirededitpage. Selecting and executing utility functions

Writing (saving)
Ifyouwanttokeepanyoftheeditsyouhavemade,youmustwrite(save)them. ThisWriteoperationwillsavetheeditedsettingsontheKROME. IfyouselectanotherprogramorclosetheapplicationbeforeyouperformtheWriteoperation, thecontentyouhadbeeneditingwillbelost.Thesameappliestocombinationsorsongs. Globalmodesettingsaremaintaineduntilyouclosetheapplication,butyourchangeswillbe lostwhenyouclosetheapplication.Ifyouclickthe[DUMP]buttonlocatedintheupperright ofeachpageinGlobalmode,thecurrentsettingswillbesavedintheKROME.(Somepages donothavethe[DUMP]button.) Asanexample,hereshowtowriteaprogramthatyouveeditedinProgrammode.

Selecting a track
YoucanselectthecurrenttrackintheSequencermode.Thecurrenttrackiscommontoeach pageintheSequencermode.Toselectatrack,clickthetracknumberwithyourmouse.Ifthe trackisselectedasthecurrenttrack,aredborderwillbeshownaroundthetrack. Note: There may be pages where the current track cannot be selected. A red border appears aroundthecurrenttrackonthepagewherethecurrenttrackcanbeselected.

Functions provided by the KROME

Tone Adjust Thisfunctionprovidesaneasywaytoeditthesoundofprograms,theprogramsused withinacombination,ortheprogramsusedbysongtracks.IntheKROMEEditor,you canperformthesameToneAdjustoperationsasyoucanfromtheKROMEitself. Arpeggiator Thearpeggiatorisafunctionthatautomaticallyproducesarpeggios(brokenchords). TheKROMEEditorletsyouedittheparametersoftheKROMEs(maximumof)two arpeggiatorsineachmode(PROG,COMBI,SEQ),editarpeggiopatternsinGLOBAL mode,andalsoviewthesettingsofthefourknobsinrealtime.Thearpeggiopattern editscreenletsyoueditthearpeggiopatternwhileyoulistentothephrase.

Drum Track TheDrumTrackisapatternsequencerdedicatedtoplayingdrumpatterns.Youcan useitinanymode:Program,Combination,orSequencer.IntheKROMEEditoryou canturnthedrumperformanceon/off,selectdrumpatterns,selectdrumprograms, andeditthesettingsoftheassignedtimbreallinrealtime.

Software Setup (Initial settings for KROME Editor)


GlobalmodeSoftwareSetupletsyouspecifythedefaultsettingsthattheKROMEEditorwill usewhenitstartsup.ThissettingissavedwhenyouexecutetheUTILITYcommandSaveas Default,andwillberememberedthenexttimeyoustartup.

Total Recall & Data Sync Setting

Hereyoucanspecifytheeditordatathatwillbesavedandloadedaspartofthesongdataby yourDAWsoftware.Thissettingletsyousaveonlythedatayouneed.WhentheKROME Editorstartsup,thetypesofdatathatyouvecheckedherewillalsobeloadedautomatically fromtheKROMEthatsconnectedtoyourcomputer.(Inotherwords,thisdatawillbesyn chronized.)Sinceadatadumprequiresacertainamountoftime,youmaywishtoshortenthe startuptimebyusingtheAutoLoadFilefunctioninsteadofthisfunction,orbyusingthe UTILITYcommandLoadtoloadapreviouslysaveddatafileintotheKROMEEditor.

Auto Load File

WhentheKROMEEditorstartsup,thedatafileyouspecifyherewillautomaticallybeloaded intotheeditor.Afterthisprocessiscompleted,thedatayoucheckedinTotalRecall&Data SyncSettingwillbeloadedviadatadump.

Local Control

ThissettingautomaticallysetstheKROMEsLocalControlsettingtotheappropriatestate whenyoustartuptheeditor.Werecommendthatyounormallyleavethisparameteron.The KROMEsLocalControlsettingwillberesettoitsoriginalstatewhenyouclosetheeditor.

MIDI Settings

HereyoucanadjustsettingsfortheMIDIconnectionsbetweentheKROMEEditorandthe KROME.

MIDI IN Port / MIDI OUT Port


ThisselectstheconnectionportfortheKROMEandtheKROMEEditor.Thenameofthe MIDIportthatscurrentlyconnectedisshown.Youwontneedtochangethissettingifthe KROMEandKROMEEditorareconnectedcorrectly,sincetheKROMEEditorwillsearchfor theKROMEwhenitstartsup,anditwillspecifytheMIDIportautomatically.

Send KROMEs MIDI Out data to the host application (VST Plug-In Only)
Ifyouturnthisoptionon,theMIDIOUTdataoftheKROMEitselfwillbesenttothehost applicationastheoutputoftheplugininstrument. ShortmessagesaretheonlytypeofMIDImessagesthatcanbeoutput.Ifyoureusingahost applicationthatisabletoreceivetheMIDIdatasentbyaplugininstrument,theMIDImes sagesgeneratedbytheKROMEsarpeggiatorfunctioncanbesenttotheMIDItrackofadif ferentsoftwaresynthesizer.

Cautions
USB connection
If you lose data synchronization with the KROME when starting-up the editor, please check the following points.
IfyoureusingUSBMIDI,youmustusetheKORGUSBMIDIDriver.Thedefaultdriver providedbytheoperatingsystemmayhaveanextremelyslowdatatransferrate,ormay notcommunicatecorrectly. IfyoureusingaUSBhub,tryconnectingtheKROMEdirectlytoaUSBportonthecompu teritselftoseewhetheritwillwork.YoucanalsotryremovingallotherconnectedUSB devicesexceptfortheKROMEitself. Whenyoulosedatasynchronization,pleaseperformtheReceiveAllorTransmitAll functionintheEditorsUTILITYmenuinordertosynchronizethedatabetweenthe editorandthehardware.
