Grades 10-12 1.Match your birth year with the Chinese calendar. Do you feel this animal symbol represents you? If so? How, If not? What animal(s) do you feel would better represent you? Why? 2. How can you design your lantern using this animal and/or images? 3. What will the animals stance be like, its expression? 4. How will you place it on you lantern? 5. What colors will you use? Color: What color do you think is associated with Rat?, Dragon? Dog?

6. Will there be anything around your animal, such as branches, bamboo, grass, flowers, rocks, water?

This lesson plan focuses on the theme of Art is about finding out about others. They will study about Asian Art forms, aesthetics and traditions. In this first lesson students learn about the Asian paper lantern, and the traditional Chinese calendar with animal symbols. They will make a personally meaningful paper lantern using animal symbols. Students will explore rice paper, watercolor techniques, and materials.

Evaluation: 1. The student will complete an exit slip describing his/her understanding of traditional Chinese paper lanterns and Chinese animal symbols. The student will complete a Visual Arts & Design (Two-dimensional) School-wide rubric that assesses how well s/he built a paper lantern and how effectively s/he made use of a personal animal symbol. 3. The students will reflect on their work. The student will write a written reflection describing his or her own assessment of the finished lantern. This will be based on the TEXT Rubric format

Identify their animal symbol, reproduce image, select ways to express image, demonstrate their ability to use calligraphy and watercolor techniques, write exit slips & reflections, experiment with techniques and deisgn and create a paper lantern.
