Organizing Yourself for the Year - things to do: On your computer: Electronic course folders by subject name. One new folder for each academic class to be placed in My documents on your C. drive and identical folders on your h drive. Hint: start each folder with a _ and they will group together. Add electronic textbooks to your subject files in My Documents if you use Kurzweil. You will find them on the j drive, under Learning Commons. Show KJ how you access a given page of your textbook for your course. Think ahead about backing up your work I suggest using your H:drive as much as possible, and getting used to a double-saving routine.
Lotus: E-mail folders for each course. One new folder for each academic class to be made and placed in your e-mail folders section. Same hint as above: start each folder with a _ and they will group together. Consider other folders: Sports, Advisor, University emails, Personal Colour code email from your advisor and your teachers (More/ Preferences/Sender Color. Set automatic spellcheck on your email: Preferences/Mail/Message Options Add course timetable to your Lotus Notes calendar. With calendar open, go to Actions | add timetable. Add extras to calendar sports, Grove Time/leadership sessions, appts
Bookmark your course databases at side toolbar. Go to Database | Open an Application | choose OLC1 | choose the department folder, then course icon. All items relevant to me completed and shown to my teacher:
Your to do list: Identify a method you use to keep track of your work on a day-to-day basis. Do you use your online calendar, electronic post-it notes, a paper planner or notebook Your binders: One for each course All pages fastened in. Date on all pages. Dividers separating daily notes, handouts, tests Each binder clearly organized for the tasks of the subject. Your University Password Document: Create a document (saved in your University Folder) with the following headings: University Log-In Info; OUAC; Individual Schools
Your room: a clear workspace, near a network and electric plug. Good lighting on your workspace. An organized space for textbooks. Writing utensils and all tools at arm's reach. Gather and keep all school supplies in one place in your room. Keep one pencil case for regularly used items needed in class.
Reminders at the door for items you need to bring to the classroom block each day. For example, binders, computer, pen, pencil, planner... meds? Consider BIG post-it notes, or a white board. Get into the habit of using it! Create a come and go place a home for your knapsack when not in use, a hook for your sports clothes (to keep the drop and run factor contained). Simplify! Have you heard of the K.I.S.S. principle? Keep it simple sweetie can be applied to simplifying your life by limiting your purchases and what you bring from home. Set up a wall calendar to keep track of what is coming up. Make it part of your Sunday routine to look at the whole weeks activities and school work. Consider routines that add harmony and consistency to daily living. LCS gives you some structure, what routines can you create to keep your days stress free? Quiet times, lights out and visiting times are good to discuss with your roommate.
