ExamView: Nuts and Bolts Setup: Folders

Pages 1-3 contain information on how to set up your ExamView programs to work without the hassles of having to continually look for files. When the program was installed on your computer, its defaults for saving and retrieving files were unavoidably set to the C: Drive. Follow the screen shots on the next few pages and you wont have to think much about your file structures C: Drives, M: Drives, or H: Drives. Dont worry about memorizing any of this information as you will only have to do it once or twice.

1. ExamViewLan 2. Your teacher subfolder within examviewlan 3. ExamView Test banks on the Teacher Common Drive 4. Testing Shortcuts

A folder named ExamViewLan has been placed on the Student Common (M:drive). This is where all Published LAN tests reside (within individual teacher folders). Open the examviewlan folder and you should see your teacher folder. This folder is where you will publish ExamView Test for your classes. ETs can assist with setting this up correctly It is suggested that you copy the test banks for your subject area to your local H:drive. This way you can modify the banks to meet your needs without negatively impacting anyone else at your school. Located on the Student Common Drive, the testing shortcuts provide a simple way for students to access your published test in order to take a LAN test. There should be a testing shortcut that corresponds to each teacher folder. There should be a separate shortcut corresponding to each folder located within ExamViewLan

5. Teacher folder
You will need to create a folder on your H: Drive to store your tests and test banks. These files are private and not for student eyes. Although you can name this folder anything you want, I recommend naming it ExamView. Within the ExamView folder, create two additional folders, one named Testbanks and the other Tests

Take a few moments to set up the default locations for opening and saving files. You will need to do this for your teacher computer back in the classroom after todays training. It is suggested you save classes to your local computer. If the class file is opened in multiple locations at the same time, the file can become corrupted this is why it should not be saved on your H:drive. You can save a Back-Up copy of the class file to your H:drive but this should not be utilized on a regular basis.

ExamView Test Manager (version 6.2)

1. Overview 2. Creating a class 3. Adding a student
This is the program that allows you to grade tests at the click of a button and monitor student and class progress. When you start a New Class, save it on your local computers C:drive. You can set up the program to automatically open to your folder (see Nuts & Bolts Setup: ExamView Test Manager on p.3) The student ID is the important thing here. It is how the program really tells students apart. Make sure to add a test student that you can use to double check your LAN test. Note: your ET can assist you with importing students from Aspen or you can manually create your class. After publishing a test to the LAN, you need to let your Test Manager know it exists. You add the test as an assignment.

Taking a LAN Test

ExamView Player (version 6.2)
1. Opening a test
Students should be able to click on your shortcut within the Testing Shortcuts folder located on the Student Common Drive (the shortcut has your name on it). The students enter their name and ID number to the prompt. The ID number identifies the student and is based on what you have listed for the student in your ExamView Class file. Students choose the test they need to take within your folder. Students click on END when all questions have been answered and EXIT out of the program. You can select whether students receive feedback immediately when exiting the test, when all students have finished the test or not at all.

Notes A LAN is a Local Area Network. This is accessible only in the school. Publishing a test is different from saving a test. A saved test can be opened and edited whereas a published exam is being made available for students to take it via the LAN. Things to consider and explore at a later date: You can create short answer questions and grade them through ExamView Manager. You can create your own tests and test banks in ExamView Test Generator. It is possible to import tests created in Word into ExamView using the Import Utility. Differentiation Ideas to consider: Publish multiple versions (levels) of the same test. It is possible to provide feedback to students when they choose the wrong answer (each answer). Allow a student to check his/her answers. (see slide F on page 7 of this handout) Allow students to retake quizzes for mastery learning. (see slide C on page 6) Technical Notes: It is possible to set up ExamView so it defaults to the folders you are trying to access. This will save a good deal of time browsing around folders. See the Nuts and Bolts section of this handout. ExamView Video Tutorials and Additional Information can be found at the following website: http://technology.kdso.eportalnow.net
