The Ruin Academy is an experimental platform for knowledge building on

the way towards the Third Generation City the ruin of the industrial city.
The Academy offers a public sphere for cross-disciplinary communication
within the general field of built human environment, city. We dont focus
in the different disciplines of art and science. We focus on local knowledge,
people and stories. The Academy is more like a Pub than a University or
like a public sauna in Finland, where everybody is stripped naked from the
President to the Police.
We must build a public sauna to the Ruin Academy.

The Ruin Academy sends an open call to think on the urban environment
the city, the people and the nature. We want to understand the ruining
processes in Taipei. Ruin is when man-made has become part of nature.
People are ruining the industrial city; this is connected with the local
knowledge. Who are the professors of the Local Knowledge in Taipei?
They should be the bar-tenders of the Ruin Academy.
The Ruin Academy is an independent and free platform where the different
student groups and other players can meet. The Academy is about
knowledge building. It is a simultaneous construction site and a ruin. We
dont know what we will find but the first step is to break the box, ruin the
city. What comes to the academic control, we will give up in order to let
nature step into our ruin. There is no other discipline than nature. There is
our Pub.

Acupuncture is the procedure of inserting and manipulating needles

year the MUSEUM of TOMORROW project was also launched,

and it is based on the idea of A Better Tomorrow. In the past few
years, internationally renowned architects have been invited to
host symposiums and lectures to introduce thier ways of thinking on
architecture and urban issues.
UrbanCore Arts Block project started from the spring of 2010. It is an
experimental project that intended to useing arts as a new element to
bring in vitalities to an old city neighborhood.
Free empty houses was provided by parent company JUT Land
Development Group. The block is a complete area among at Zhonghua
Rd. and Yanping South Rd in Taipei city, Taiwan. The spot used to be
included in the old city center of Taipei, thus the name UrbanCore.
Core also means the core of fruit, referring the old city center to an
eaten and corrupted fruit core. History has been forgotten, but we
hope this plan can nurture the land with art and culture, bringing the
core into life again.
UrbanCore Arts Block is an almost two years plan. Before September
of 2011, non-profit art and culture associations and creative groups
will be invited to the site and exert their creation laboratory freely.

on an organic farmland

facing the Pacific Ocean in Dulan, South-Taiwan.

The stealth structure has to cope with heavy

typhoons hitting straight from the Ocean, with
flooding waters and with earthquakes. A normal
reaction would be to build a concrete bunker and
keep the nature out of the architecture. Fort EGG
is constructed though with a minimal amount of
material. The primary structure is out of bamboo
arches that are combined of 6 bamboos each tied
together. The arches are then wrapped around
with two layers of bamboo mending surfaces with
a waterproofing layer in-between. Creepers are
allowed to grow on top of the outer bamboo layer

to cool off the building.

To test the structure we made a model 1:3 on

the site. The construction was started in summer
2010 and will take quite a while. Everything is
hand-made with love.
The project accepts volunteers for construction
work.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The previous version was circled, now modified to an egg shape.
But still the main bamboo construction making a pentagon window
on top. This window is good for the air flow through the whole house.
Here are using 6 to 7 meters long bam boo sticks. For each arch is
used only two pieces of bamboo connected on thicker part together.
The sticks are fixed by iron wire and all these arches are fixed
on every cross. It makes the construction very strong and stable!

FOR FOUNDATION
Bigger bamboo, sort of flag pole holder, with top enforced by iron wire. Every
piece of foundations bamboos is hammered into the ground with a specific
angle.

FOR DRAINAGE
I made a hole on end of every bamboo pipe.
Next step was to make a BAMBOO MATRACE all over. Within space for
door and window. For matrace are used bamboo strips made from bamboo
sticks by special tool.

AND WHAT IF IT RAINS?

The easiest way how to make a shelter waterproof is to use the asphalt
paper. The kind we used is glued on one side. Because the surface of the
shelter wasnt straight, every one meter we made a wave for connection of
the direction. Moreover, for better stability of asphalt paper, we used on top
of every layer one strip of bamboo. Next layer of asphalt paper is over this
place.
