Depression transformed into beauty Passionate, spiritual, learned and fabulously wealthy, the third Marquess of Bute created extraordinary buildings, supported the mission of the Catholic Church, and funded secular education at Glasgow and St Andrews Universities. In a gorgeously illustrated talk given in celebration of the release of her book, The Grand Designer, in paperback, Rosemary Hannah explores the links between Butes faith as a convert, his passionate advocacy of education, and his inspiring collaboration with some of the finest artists and architects of his generation.
