1- STRUCTURAL DESIGN CRITERIA

1-1. DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:

The building consists of 3 floors (Ground floor, First floor and roof)

1-2. STRUCTURAL SYSTEM :

1-2-1.FLOOR FRAMING SYSTEM :

The floor framing system for the whole building consist of hollow block slabs supported by dropped beams
on the prephery of the building and hidden beams inside the building

The foundation system is isolated footing as per soil report

1-2-2.LATERAL LOAD RESISTING SYSTEM :

The lateral load resisting system of buildings provides resistance to wind and seismic forces
consists of reinforced concrete beams and columns.

1-3. DESIGN STANDARD AND CODES

The American Standards (ACI-318M-02), For the design of structural elements

Uniform Building Code
Code, UBC 1997
1997, For live
live, seismic and wind loads
loads.

1-4. MATERIAL AND STRESSES :

1-4-1. CONCRETE :

The characteristic concrete cylinder compressive strength after 28 days shall be as follows:

- Footings = 28 N/mm2
- Cast in-situ slabs, beams, ribs and columns = 28 N/mm2

1-4-2. STEEL REINFORCEMENT :

High yield steel " T "

- Specified characteristic strength Fy for bars, ties and stirrups = 420 N/mm2

1-4-3. Hollow blocks :

- Weight of the hollow block shall not be exceed 15 Kg

1-5. CONCRETE COVER TO STEEL REINFORCEMENT :

Concrete cover to steel reinforcement shall be provided to protect the reinforcement against
corrosion and fire as per ACI 318 Clause 7.7
The clear concrete cover shall be as following:

= 75 mm
1. concrete permanently exposed to soil
= 20 mm
2. Slabs
= 40 mm
3. Beams and columns

4 of 87
1-6 LOADS :

1-6-1 Gravity Loads (in excess of self weight of member):

1- Ground and first floors

Live load for rooms = 2.00 kN/m2

Live load for balaconies = 3.00 kN/m2
Finishes = 1.50 kN/m2
Partitions = 3.50 kN/m2 Load per vertical area

2- Roof floor

Live load = 2.00 kN/m2

Finishes = 3.00 kN/m2

- Own weight of reinforced concrete = 25 kN/m3

- Own weight of plain concrete = 22 kN/m3

1-6-3. Lateral loads :

1-6-3.1 Wind load :

Wind load calculation shall be done using UBC 97 as following
Wind speed = 90 MPH
Exposure = C
Ce = 1.06
Cq = 1.30
qs = 1.00 kN/m2

Iw = 1.00

B- Determination of Ductility factor, R

According to UBC97 Table (16-N) with the basic strucure system as Building frame system and the lateral

force resisting system as OMRF, the ductility factor, R= 5.5 R=5.6

1630.1 C- Design lateral Force

The following earthquake load loads shall be used in the load combinations

E = ρEh +Ev Eq. (30-1)

where
ρ =1.0 Reliability/Redundancy factor
Ev The load effect resulting from vertical component of the earthquake ground motion
and is equal to an addition of 0.5 CaID to the dead load effect, for strength

design and may be taken as zero for Allowable Stress Design

Therefore, the dead load will be increased by amount =
=0.5 * 0.09 * 1 * d

Ev = 0.045 D

Vertical component will be included in the load combinations

6 of 87
D- Consideration of P-D effects
The resulting member forces and moments and the story drifts included by P∆ effects shall be considered in

the evaluation of overall structural frame stability and shall be evaluated using the force producing the

displacement of δs. P-D included

E- Modeling Requirements
The mathematical model of the physical structure shall include all elements of the lateral force-resisting
system. The model shall also include the stiffness and strength of elements, which are significant to the

distribution of forces and shall represent the spatial distribution of the mass and stiffness of the structure.

In addition, stiffness properties shall consider the effects of cracked sections. A reduction factors (Ie/Ig)beam 0.35
(Ie/Ig)col 0.7
As per ACI 318M will be utilized to recognize such effects. (Ie/Ig)slab 0.25

F-Story Drift Limitations

Calculated story drift using ∆m shall not exceed 0.02 times the story height.

The maximum inelastic response displacement ∆m shall be computed as follows:

∆m=0.7 R ∆s

where ∆s is the elastic displacement calculated using the load combinations.
