The student will be able to recall the names of the oceans. - The student will be able to locate the five oceans on a map. - Oceans (enough for each student to get one) - Blank Map - Ocean puzzle pieces (5 continents, each ocean in 5-6 puzzle pieces) - Blue crayons - 5 Computers - Virtual Fieldtrip http://msbesleysclassroom.weebly.com - Blank Map Have a blank world map posted to the front whiteboard. Introduction (5 minutes) - Today class, we will be spending time being able to locate and identify the oceans. As you remember, yesterday we learned about the seven continents and where they are located. Like the continents, there are multiple oceans. Does anyone have any continents questions before we move on? Answer any questions they may have. Instructional Strategies (30 minutes) - OK, lets start with the oceans now. What is an ocean? - water - really big - surround the continents definition: a very large body of water - Class, does anyone know how many oceans there are in the world? Have them give a few guesses. - Okay, yes there are 5 oceans in the world! Have any of you ever swam in an ocean? (few hands raise) Do you know the name of the ocean? Or where you were? Yes ____? o Florida (possible) - Good, that means you were swimming in

the Atlantic Ocean. For our activity, we are going to break up into 5 table groups. Each table group is going to be in charge of learning about an ocean. You will each go on a Virtual Fieldtrip of your ocean! Once you have finished your fieldtrip, you will each get a puzzle piece of your ocean to color blue! When your group is finished, put your puzzle pieces together to form your ocean. Once thats done, come glue it to the blank map on the front wall. When time is up, each group will come up front, and share some information about their ocean with the class so we can all learn about your ocean! I am going to give each of you each of you a worksheet. I want you to check out the oceans and where they are located on the map in your worksheet. There is a word bank to help you with the names of the oceans o Pass out the worksheets. While the students are working on this, walk around the classroom and see if they are finding the items or need any help. Collect worksheets.

Summary (5 minutes) - Keep the map up and point to the oceans, saying the names and having the students repeat them. - OK class, you all did an excellent job today learning all of the oceans! Do any of you have questions on what we covered today? Pause for any questions. - The worksheet assessment will help the teacher to recognize if the students have an understanding of the names and locations of the 5 oceans. - Special Needs students are supported by having the students work in small groups and by the teacher walking around during

instruction and assessment. Visual learners are supported through the use of maps, globes, and visual activities. Kinesthetic learners are supported through the use of hands on activities. Auditory learners are supported with classroom discussion. Based on readiness: o Advanced students can label the 7 continents along with the 5 oceans on the assessment worksheet. o Less advanced students can just work on labeling the 5 oceans.
