LITERATURE & RHETORIC AND WRITING EMPHASES

1. Generate a close reading of a text, recognizing, understanding, and interpreting a text's

elements.
2. Demonstrate familiarity with English language literary and rhetorical traditions,
including prominent authors, genres, movements, and styles, as well as the historical and
cultural contexts important to those traditions.
3. Demonstrate familiarity with literary and rhetorical works by writers of diverse
backgrounds.
4. Engage in disciplinary conversations, drawing on theory and scholarship in fields
appropriate to one’s area of emphasis.
5. Engage in research and sustained inquiry, which is disseminated in an appropriate
forum(s).
6. Recognize and write effective prose, attending to such features as style, genre,
audience, and purpose.

A student graduating from this program will be able to

1. Select and modify writing strategies for different discourse communities

2. Understand and use stylistic and genre conventions
3. Apply invention/writing-to-learn techniques and recursive composing
processes
4. Write collaboratively (co-authoring, giving and using feedback, etc.)
5. Integrate appropriate sources using primary and secondary research
methods
6. Demonstrate competence in fundamental areas of writing (e.g., focus,
organization, development, voice/tone, prose style, editing)
7. Perform rhetorical analysis and critique of a variety of texts
8. Understand the dynamic role of language in culture, history, and society
9. Engage in disciplinary conversations, drawing on knowledge of rhetoric
and composition studies
