Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are subject to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editions as necessary. It is important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest edition, and any amendments thereto. Full details of all Australian Standards and related publications will be found in the Standards Australia Catalogue of Publications; this information is supplemented each month by the magazine The Australian Standard, which subscribing members receive, and which gives details of new publications, new editions and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards. Suggestions for improvements to Australian Standards, addressed to the head office of Standards Australia, are welcomed. Notication of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australian Standard should be made without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

This Standard was issued in draft form for comment as DR 97092.

PREFACE
This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia / Standards New Zealand Committee RC/5, Radiocommunications Infrastructure. It is the result of a consensus among the representatives on the Joint Committee that it be produced as an Australian Standard. The objective of this Standard is to provide designers and installers of coaxial cabling systems (primarily those for free-to-air TV, subscription TV and in-house video services) with recommendations for the selection of appropriate components and proper installation practices, in order to meet the criteria for acceptable performance, particularly in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). This Standard supports legislative effort to minimize electromagnetic pollution which is anticipated in the face of ubiquitous and rapidly growing coaxial cable carrier networks and distribution systems within premises. This Standard is intended as a guide, and promotes general aspects of current good engineering practice. A Standard which will cover, in much greater detail, the performance specifications, safety and EMC requirements for coaxial distribution systems for television and sound signals in premises, is in the course of preparation. The term informative has been used in this Standard to define the application of the appendix to which it applies. An informative appendix is only for information and guidance.

STANDARDS AUSTRALIA Australian Standard A guide to coaxial cabling in single and multiple premises
1 SCOPE AND APPLICATION

1.1 Scope This Standard provides a summary of recommended cables, connectors and installation techniques for coaxial cabling installations, primarily those for free-to-air (FTA), subscription TV (pay TV) and in-house video services. It aims to discourage the use of incorrect/inferior cable and connectors and/or poor installation practices which are likely to have a detrimental effect on the system performance, including electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). The emission and immunity performance of active and passive equipment (splitters, amplifiers and similar devices) is not covered in this Standard. The key issues covered in this Standard are the following: (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) Selection of cable and connectors. Care in installation (both in locating and handling). Correct termination. Safety. EMC.

NOTE: Appendix A defines terms commonly used in the industry.

1.2 Application Appropriately chosen cable and connectors, correctly installed using the advice given in this Standard, should meet, and help to maintain, the system performance specifications. 2 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS Standard: AS 3000 The following documents are referred to in this

Electrical installations Buildings, structures and premises (known as the SAA Wiring Rules)

CABLE INSTALLATION

3.1 General Cabling should be run following the most direct route, to minimize excessive loss due to long runs. Consideration should be given to factors which can compromise cabling integrity and performance. The practices listed in Clause 3.2 should be adhered to.
