Chapter 4: Review Question #2 What is the flat-file model? The flat-file environment promotes a single-user view approach to data management whereby end users own their data files rather than share them with other users. Data files are therefore structured, formatted, and arranged to suit the specific needs of the owner or primary user of the data. Such structuring, however, may exclude data attributes that are useful to other users, thus preventing successful integration of data across the organization.

Chapter 9: Review Question #2 Distinguish between a packing slip, a shipping notice, and a bill of lading. A packing slip is a document that accompanies goods when they are delivered. It is designed to aid recipients of the shipments in confirming that all items that were supposed to be included in the shipment have actually arrived. It includes a description of each item included, as well as the quantity of each item shipped. A shipping notice informs the billing department that the customers order has been filled and shipped. This document contains such pertinent facts as the date of shipment, items and quantities shipped, the carrier, and freight charges. A bill of lading is a document between the shipper and the carrier detailing the type, quantity, and destination of the goods being carried. It also serves as a receipt of shipment when the good is delivered to the predetermined destination.
