A The student is expected to read simple examples of music notation. Objective We/I will learn to read treble notes C-D-E-F-G. Date: March 1, 2014 Grade Level: One 2. Big Understandings Do you know what a songbook is? It is a book that has written music. Have you ever read a songbook? Where will you read a songbook? At church, if you sing in a choir, and if you play in a band. Life is a celebration. We use music to celebrate. Music is a language. When you can read music, you will sing and play better with others.

3 Assessment Evidence Every student within each group will write and name the given notes on their own at the back of the class while the rest are thinking of the answers from their seats. 4. Opening Hook Everyone please stand up and move to the beat. (plays a song from Windows Media Player for 35 seconds and shows song lyrics) We are going to the zoo to learn to read five treble notes. Big understandings. 5. Instructional Strategies / Student Activities Teacher Input -Knock, knock. [S: whos there?]. Cat! Everyone saysCat. See my short whisker line. I am a cat. I am spelled C-AT. The first letter is my name. I am a C note. (turn the paper plate) Remember my whisker. (tape the cat note on the board) -Knock, knock. [S: whos there?]. Dog! Everyone saysDog. I am a dog. I am spelled D-O-G. The first letter is my name. I am a D note. (turn the paper plate and tape the dog note on the board) I hang off line 1. I am a D. -Knock, knock. [S: whos there?]. Elephant! Everyone saysElephant. I am an elephant. I am spelled E-L-E-P-H-AN-T. The first letter is my name. I am an E note. (turn the paper plate and tape the elephant note on the board) I sit on line 1 of the treble clef. I am an E. -What does the cat represent? How about the dog? Elephant? Do we see any pattern? Think alphabet, we know the music alphabet, which animal do we expect to see next, frog or goat? (CFU) - F is the first space in the treble clef. -Stepping up the alphabet is a G note. G sits on line 2 of the treble clef. Modeling -The teacher models the thinking process to identify the notes. Guided Practice -We saw five animals in the zoo in this order: Cat represents a C, dog represents a D, elephant represents an E, frog represents F, and goat represents a G. -Remember a cats whisker, you know its a C. Then you can figure out the rest of the notes by saying the music alphabet from C. -Each group will take a turn reading the given note. -Group 1, who am I? How do you figure out the note? Restate the thinking process. CFU CFU is everywhere in this process through questioning, monitoring, and providing feedback. -Are the notes going up or down? -Can you say the letter names backwards? -Are you stepping up or down the music alphabet?

Independent Practice -When your group is called, come to the back of the class, each of you will write and name the given notes on your own. If you are done, close your answers, and raise your hand. -For the rest of you, think of the answers from your seats. Next will probably be your turn. 6.
