Assignment #3 Major Project (eP artifact) Application of the 4Cs Jane Jacek March 22, 2014 Course and

Grade/Age Level: Physical Education Grade 10 (ages 15-18) I teach in a DL school. I developed from the ground up the Physical Education program. The following are the BC Prescribed Learning Outcomes, as outlined by the British Columbia Ministry of Education (2008),that can be demonstrated/met through the use of the MapMyFitness app. (see app info below): implement a comprehensive physical activity plan incorporating goal setting processes, components of fitness, considerations of personal abilities and interests, nutritional considerations, principles of training. participate daily in moderate to vigorous physical activity to enhance fitness apply principles of training to improve fitness, proactively obtain and apply reliable information from various sources (e.g., previous performance measurements, feedback from teachers and coaches ) to maintain or improve their components of fitness. (pg 38)

The British Columbia Ministry of Education (2008) has also outlined specific physical activities that meet the learning outcomes. (pg 16-17) MapMyFitness App Image and Info:

Course/Academic Info: In a bricks and mortar school the teacher plans the units of study both in relation to physical activities students will participate in and study of proper nutrition. In relation to the former the teacher would observe the students participation both daily in a semester based school or two to three times a week in a linear based school, and at the end of each unit students are given a test in relation to their understanding of the game rules and/or nutrition. Being face to face the teacher can give immediate feedback in relation to students participation and students can ask, for example in relation to the weekly runs, to see how their time has improved as it is tracked on a chart. In my course students are in charge of developing their own physical activity plan and participating in physical activity out in the community at a time and place that meets their needs, whether they are part of a school team or participating on their own and/or with family or friends. The course requirement is submission of written evidence that entails tracking their participation and then reflecting on their participation which also includes goal setting and discussion about meeting their nutritional needs, as well as submission of confirmation from a parent/guardian. Students see their progression through their reflections, by reviewing previous goals and seeing change over time as noted in their tracking forms. They also receive feedback from those they participate with and a parent/guardian when they share their tracking prior to submitting to me. Feedback from me is received once the assignment is submitted. During an assignment this only occurs if they email me for guidance.

Clark Quinn 4 Cs (2010): Content: the provision of media (e.g. documents, audio, video, etc) to the learner/performer Compute: taking in data from the learner and processing it Capture: taking in data from sensors including camera, GPS, etc, and saving for sharing or reflection Communicate: connecting learners/performers with others Representation of the 4 Cs: The MapMyFitness app takes the ability to plan ones participation and then track it for future reference and analysis, receive feedback and track their food intake/nutrition to the next level. Students download the free app and then create an account either through email or Facebook. Content: Once an account is made and the student logs in for the first time it takes them through a step by step tutorial on how to use the apps content which is log a workout, log food, activity feed, routes, friends, challenges, nutrition and workouts. Included as part of the content, is being able to connect to the GPS function in ones phone. One can input weight and height in the app so calories burned can be tracked. Also one can set a verbal feedback option. If selected one can receive positive verbal feedback as one reaches a milestone, such as completion of each kilometre of the day`s run. There is also an option in

the content settings to connect MapMyFitness with the app MyFitnessPal, a calorie counter. Instructions found at the following link explains how to connect the two apps http://about.mapmyfitness.com/2014/01/myfitnesspal/. To track a specific days activity one goes in to the apps content and identifies which activity they are about to participate in and then pushes the start button. Compute and Capture: With the phone along it captures/tracks participation, noting the length of time one has participated. If the GPS is activated the app will also track the exact route and distance one travel. With the input of ones weight and height it will track the calories burned during participation. Once one has completed the activity they push the stop activity button and then slide to finish. The app then allows you if you wish but not required to enter a comment in relation to the activity and then when one pushes save; it saves the comment along with the activity data. One then goes back in to the app at any time to analyze their participation and if set can also look at calories burned, distance travelled and route taken. Over time the app computes your progress and shows stats. Communicate: Information can be shared/communicated with others who also have an account in MapMyFitness, through either a friends only or public settings. If one chooses friends only then you can invite friends to view your dashboard or they can send you a friend request which when accepted allows them to view your dashboard and vice versa. In both instances once they view your dashboard they can also comment on it. If you choose a public setting than any others who have MapMyFitness accounts can easily see your dashboard and also comment on at it any time (not a recommended setting). Dashboard includes, distance stats during a certain period of time, duration of activities, number and type of workouts, and calories burned..

MapMyFitness App, Project/Long Term Assignment in relation to the 4 Cs: Content, Compute and Capture: I could see this app being incorporated as part of the first assignment for this course. Students would be required to download the MapMyFitness app, create an account which includes, if they wish, activating the GPS and inputting weight and height, and then they invite me to be a friend. They would use the app to track their participation for the first assignment, which means they would have their cell phone with them and activated while participating in the first 10 hours of physical activity. During this time the content would be used in the following ways: use the comment section that appears once an activity is ended, to note details about the activity and then log a workout to note distance, time spent and type of activity, and if applicable calories burned. They would use the log food to note how they are meeting their nutritional needs. The app will easily allow them to track the length of time they have participated and keep in one location the key information for the first assignment and then look back for reflection and sharing. Communicate: With access to a students account I can see distance stats for a certain period of time, duration of activities, number and type of workouts, and if activated calories burned. I am able then to supply immediate feedback (comment) as the student works through the assignment, and they can respond to my comment. A students friends using the app who have been given friend access can also comment on the students progress and

vice versa. Communication can occur student to student, student to teacher, and teacher to student. Previously students, usually, would have completed and submitted the first assignment before receiving feedback from me the teacher. My comments given through the app allows for feedback, from the start of the course. Feedback from other students presently only occurs if they have a friend who is also registered in the course and they keep active together. This app allows friends, who may not be active together but both are in my course, to follow each others progress. Having others there for support and guidance has been proven to be a great motivator, as each sees the others progress and can cheer them on when they may not be meeting their goals; as well it sometimes leads to competition between two or more to see who can meet their goals first. They can also see what each other is participating in and this may lead to them deciding to participate together. As I will also have an account they will get to see my regular participation in physical activity, which I hope will be a motivator for them, as well, for who wants to see the teacher out doing them in their weekly participation of physical activity. Future Use: After the assignment is completed students will then have the choice of continuing to use the app or not. As this course is designed such that students can make a choice about their learning I feel it is important for them to decide if this tool does or does not meet their needs. My hope is that they will see the benefits the ability to easily track their participation for future reference and analysis, set goals, receive feedback and track their food intake/nutrition and thus see it as one of the many apps they use on a regular basis. Possible Drawbacks: Although there appear to be many benefits to using MapMyFitness there are some possible drawbacks. The app is hosted in the US, thus the information entered when creating an account which is first and last name, birth date and email address, is subject to the US privacy laws. A detailed permission form will need to be developed for this. As with any online activity students can choose to opt out of this part of the assignment, which leaves me with having to keep organized notes on who is and is not using the app. The app is created in a social network format, it is important that I make it clear to students the importance of choosing the friends only setting, as making the account public allows any third party to have access to ones information. Students may find that although this app offers one location for storing a myriad of information, it is just one more step for them in relation to tracking their participation, although I do already have students telling me that they use their phone to track their time and then transfer it over to the electronic tracking document for submission. In conclusion: Only through implementation will I find out for sure if MapMyFitness enhances my students learning while meeting the required learning outcomes.
