ABSTRACT

This paper reports the initial results of a questionnaire survey done on architectural practices in
Peninsula Malaysia. The purpose of the study was to gain an insight into the current trends in the
management of design process in architectural practice firms. It focuses on the extent to which
architect-client relationship affects the design process at various stages of the project. It also attempts
to verify whether the suggestions by various authors in the literature that greater involvement by the
clients influences the outcome of projects significantly. The survey was able to identify the client
types, categories of projects commissioned and the procurement methods adopted in local practices.
The results revealed that the majority of the practices adopt informal system of design process
management based on PAM guidelines. The majority of commissions come from individuals,
developers and federal government. The types of project are residential and institutional facilities
while traditional procurement methods are commonly used. The relationship between the architect and
their clients varied remarkable during the stages of design process. In sum, the survey reveals that a
greater 'professional' involvement of the clients in the design process could result in better outcomes
for the project, the client and the practices.

Keywords: architectural practices, design process management, architect-client relationship, client

involvement.
