Pablo Valbuena

develops artistic projects and research focused on space, time and perception. Born in Spain and currently based in the south of France. Some key elements of this exploration are the overlap of the physical and the virtual, the generation of mental spaces by the observer, the dissolution of the boundaries between real and perceived, the links between space and time, the primacy of subjective experience as a tool to communicate and the use of light as prime matter. These ideas are mostly developed site-specific, formulated as a direct response to the perceptual qualities, physical conditions and surrounding influences of a certain location or space. This body of work has been presented in public and private institutions, biennials and galleries in the form of exhibitions, site-specific commissions and large-scale public interventions throughout Europe, Asia and America.

Time Tilings
Four site-specific interventions. Videoprojection on architecture. Artefact festival, STUK Kunstencentrum. Leuven, BE. 2013 Architecture is judged by eyes that see, by the head that turns, and the legs that walk. Architecture is not a synchronic phenomenon but a successive one, made up of pictures adding themselves one to the other, following each other in time and space, like music.

Le Corbusier. Modulor I. This site-specific project brings to light several tilings of varied scales, exploring the intersection of architectural systems and time-based structures.

Quadratura

Site-specific installation. Video projection on architecture. Matadero Madrid. ES. 2010. Quadratura was the technique used in the baroque to extended architecture through trompe loeil and perspective constructions generated with paint or sculpture. This immersive site-specific installation follows the same principles but manipulating space by means of projected light. The main axis of the room is extended and the limits of the physical space dissolved.

Re-Flex

Site-specific installation. Mirrors, wood, fabric. Z33. Hasselt, BE. 2012 re- : again, back (from lat.) -flex, -flect : bend (from lat.) reflex / reflect / reflection /reflexion bending, folding back return of light or sound waves from a surface careful thought, long consideration exceeding 180 act of reflecting, state of being reflected transformation in which each point is replaced by a point symmetric with respect to a line or plane action performed without conscious thought as a response to a stimulus copy exact in essential features power of responding with adequate speed reflected source of light effect produced by an influence process comprising reception, transmission, and reaction that culminates in a reflex way of thinking or behaving image given back by a reflecting surface.

Site-specific installation. Video projection on architecture. Mattress Factory. Pittsburgh, US. 2011 para- : at or to one side of, beside, next to, beyond (from gr. para) -site : position, situation, location, state (from lat. situs) The para-sites transform the environment perceptually. They build up spatial configurations parallel to the real architecture, only suggested to the observer through three-dimensional drawings made of video-projected light and shadow.
