Integration of Technology in Schools and Libraries

The integration of technology has concerned many of us. Most people tend to feel more comfortable with the old ways of learning. For instance, learning how to read using printed books whereas others enjoy using an e-reader to read an electronic book. Yes we should protect what we know but also embrace and learn about the new changes (New Media Consortium, 2010). The usage of e-books are a new change that has a few advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages
The integration of e-books has a few advantages such as: A wide collection of e-books on Amazon and most public libraries. Able to download dozens of e-books to be used for personal or educational purposes. For the most part, most e-books are cheaper than printed books. There are some e-books that are available for free.

Able to change the size of the electronic file, so that one is able to read it at a preferred font size. Can highlight the text and take notes. Use the search box to search for specific content. The condition of the e-book stays the same and the appearance of the book cant be damaged. Saves space. Instead of having a bunch of books/textbooks piled up or to carry around, one can simply download as many books/textbooks to a computer or e-reader. (E-Book and E-Reader Guide, 2013)

Disadvantages
The integration of e-books has a few disadvantages such as: A dead battery can cause one to not be able to continue reading the electronic book. o Resolution - to have a charger handy or to charge the ereader prior to reading. Some books are not available in digital format o Resolution - one is able to check out the printed format at a library, if it is not available at the library, one is able to request the book through interlibrary loan. One may not be able to purchase e-books due to a financial budget. (E-Book and E-Reader Guide, 2013)

Decline of Textbooks
For many years, textbooks have been used to evaluate a subject and to help students to build on their knowledge. They have been produced for educational institutions and published in printed format. Now, many of the textbooks are available in electronic books and Business plans of textbook publishers have been turned upside down by the popularity of eBooks, and the rapid decline of physical books is causing traditional publishers to rewrite their business plans (Conway & Martinez-Estrada, 2012, p.126). Due to the integration of e-books there has been somewhat of a decline of textbook purchases. According to Martinez-Estrada (2012), digital books will move from a 3% to 5% market share today to account for one fourth of all unit sales by 2012 the e-textbook market will grow at an annual rate of 49 percent through 2013, when e-textbooks will command about 11 percent of textbook sales (p.126). As a result of these new changes, educators should think of creating an academic platform using e-books in their classrooms.
