Students will be participating in this project as a way to learn basic ceramic skills and also gain
an innovative perspective on the world of poverty, too close in the city of Detroit. They will
learn the basic ceramic skills of pinch pots, coil pot, slab making/pots, additive/subtractive
features, and more. Students will work to put together an actual, fully functioning Empty
Bowls event. They will be in charge of party-planning the event as well as deciding on
details such as, where the accumulated money will be donated. The rationale of this project is
to motivate students to make a difference in a way that is close to their heart- and their homes.
By leaving so much of the project up to my students, I am hoping they are motivated to create
pottery that is useful, aesthetically pleasing, helpful for the greater cause, and fun!

PROCESS The 4 Brain Essential Learning Steps (B.E.L.S.)
1. Introducing Material
a. Gleaners/Hunger/Poverty Videos: Show students the visuals from the
Gleaners Food Bank and also an informational video about the Empty
Bowls project. Start with clips about poverty and then move on with what
can we do about this? Follow with info clips about Empty Bowls.
b. Show short PowerPoint with what we are going to do, briefly discussing
the project requirements. Begin to brainstorm actual event: different
committees, researching charities to donate to, etc.
2. Collaborative Brainstorming
a. Exploring what we know Make a mind map/brainstorm focusing around
the ideas, What do we know? What do I want to know? What do I want
to do about it? Do individually (5 minutes) and then come together to
make a group brainstorm.
3. Developing a Learning Plan
a. Assigning Committees: With what students shared in the brainstorm,
present students with committee ideas and require each student sign up
for one. Have committee meet together and make a list of what they are
going to do to contribute to the event, what are their responsibilities.
b. Demonstrations of Clay Techniques Spend first 15 minutes of class
demonstrating how to complete assigned technique. Students will have
the remainder of the class to complete their pot (additional class time will
be added for noted techniques below). There will be TWO make-up days
at the end of the project where if they are missing one of their pots they
can complete it.
i. Pinch Pot (no additional time)
ii. Coil Building (3 additional class periods)
iii. Group Bowl (no additional time)
iv. Slab Building + Mold Building (3 additional class periods)
4. Taking Action Creating!
a. Must complete at LEAST FIVE bowls. One from each technique PLUS
an additional final bowl. This final bowl could be whichever technique
student chooses, or it could be a combination or techniques.
b. Requirements for each bowl:
i. Pinch Pot
1. Must fit size requirement of minimum 6 inches wide, 4 in tall
ii. Coil Bowl
1. Must follow coil techniques
2. Have at least ONE Additive feature
3. Must fit size requirement of minimum 6 in wide, 4 in tall
iii. Group Bowl
1. Can follow either pinch pot technique or boil built technique
2. Each student must participate in-group project!
iv. Slab Bowl
1. Student either needs to bring in mold (bowl) or use one of
the bowls provided.
2. Must fit size requirement of minimum 5 in tall and 7 in wide
3. Bowl decorated with at least two separate subtractive
features and two additional features
v. Final Bowl
1. Student needs to choose a clay building technique from
above, and make a bowl using that technique. Student may
also combine more then one technique while constructing
their bowl if desired.
2. This is the final project, so students will put forth effort and
show creativity in creating this final piece.
c. Final Event- Students will work effectively on their chosen committees to
