Unit Title: US Symbols

Unit Description: Over the span of 3 weeks the class will have an understanding the major US symbols. The class will be making a booklet, creating their own seal and presenting a book report to the class about their assigned US symbol.

Standards Addressed: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.6-8.4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies. 6.1.4. D: Historical symbols and the ideas and events they represent play a role in understanding and evaluating our history. 6.1.4. D: People view and interpret events differently because of the times in which they live, the experiences they have had, the perspectives held by their cultures, and their individual points of view.

Enduring Understandings 1) SWUT countries have symbols that represent how they were created. 2)SWUT symbols have deeper meanings than what they appear as.

Essential Questions 1) Why is it important to know what a symbol represents? 2) How can symbols skew someones opinion?

Subjects Integrated: Social Studies Writing/ Reading Technology Art

Day Daily Lesson Summary I will so a brief overview of the US symbols we will be learning. As a class we will make a US symbol folder. As a class we will make a booklet called Salute to Americas Symbols and answer the questions in the book. As a class we will do a close read on 9/11 and the Twin Towers.

Assessment: Students will demonstrate understanding of the US symbols as evidenced by their answers in the close reading.

Monday

I will introduce the pledge of allegiance through the story I Pledge by Bill Martin Jr. As a class we will dissect the pledge and its meaning in a t-chart. As a class we will make a flap up worksheet. Tuesday I will show a clip on the making of the American Flag. As a class we will read the Legend of Betsy Ross. The students will make the US flag. I will introduce what the colors of the flag mean. As a class we will finish making the flag. The students will write a short paragraph about what each color on the flag means. I will introduce the kids to U.S Government to Kids website. The students will go the website and research the symbols and fill out a corresponding worksheet. I will introduce the white house, capitol building and supreme court. As a class we will complete a flash card set on them. I will introduce the presidential seal. As a class we will fill out a worksheet. The students will make their our own seal on paper plates.

Students will demonstrate understanding of the pledge of allegiance as evidenced by their T-chart.

Students will demonstrate understanding of the flags colors as evidenced by their writing.

Students will demonstrate understanding of the US Symbols as evidenced by their guided research and writing.

Day Daily Lesson Summary I will introduce Uncle Sam. The students will split up into 3 groups. They will get a worksheet that has questions on Uncle Sam. There will be 3 centers/roam around the room that have paragraphs with the answers in the text and they will need to read and be text detectives to find the answers.

Tuesday

Students will demonstrate understanding of white house, capitol building and supreme court and presidential seal as evidenced by their flashcards, worksheet and personal seal.

Assessment: Students will demonstrate understanding of Uncle Sam as evidenced by their guided writing.

Thursday

Monday

I will separate the class by US Symbol and give them a reader on it. The groups will read their book and answer a guided question worksheet. The groups will fill out a book report sheet on their symbol.

Students will demonstrate understanding of their US symbol as evidenced by their worksheet.

Tuesday

Students will demonstrate understanding of their US symbol as evidenced by their report sheet.

The groups will present their symbols to the class. Thursday As a class we will play a matching review game. As a class we will fill out a study guide of all the symbols and a sentence on what they mean/represent. The class will take their quiz.

Students will demonstrate understanding of US symbols as evidenced by their presentation.

Monday

Students will demonstrate understanding of US symbols as evidenced by quiz.
