Memorandum

To: From: Date: Subject: Action Required: Cindy Raisor, Director of HR Joe Aggie, Student Recruiter February 7, 2014 Recommendation on prospective employee: Joel Jacob Respond on decision made

The purpose of this memo is to give my recommendations on Joel Jacob as a perspective employee based upon research conducted on his virtual identity. Upon meet Mr. Jacob at the career fair and receiving his resume, he seemed a good choice as a prospective employee. However, due to lack of information, I decided to conduct research on his virtual profile to gain insight to his character, skills, and extracurricular activities. Upon befriending him on Facebook and LinkedIn, and analyzing two websites that he had on his resume, I came across the following conclusion: He has well developed character especially in areas of self-control and intelligence He is very technologically skilled He is very passionate about the work he does He is lacking in social skills He has very little work experience and few professional contacts These conclusion are not completely assured as they were based on limited information received from his virtual identity. Although there are some negative conclusions, his positive attributes outweigh his negative attributes. I would strongly recommend to bring him in for an interview to gain more information about him. A more detailed results and analysis follows. (A) Character Observations Mr. Jacob shows outstanding character traits confirmed both by his resume and virtual image. In his resume he stated his most defining character traits were his passion, positive outlook, and his intelligence. Upon further research through the use of Facebook, I found he is an infrequent user of social media, getting on only once a week to share. He uses positive language, but he does not comment or reply frequently. Most the photos he is tagged in are with family or his church. His likes are mostly centered on science and technology. He also had strict security setting so that only his friends could see him. Analysis His infrequent use of social media suggests that he might not be as socially active as others but it also shows a level a self-control as gets on most weeks but only once or twice. His use of positive language enforces his positive outlook and indicates that he is mindful of his words. His pictures and few friends shows that he has a tight knit community but also suggests that he might not be as outgoing. His likes being focused around science and technology implies that he is passionate about it and is most likely well versed in those subjects. His strict privacy settings indicate that he is a very private person and cares about who sees him online. Conclusion Mr. Jacob is very intelligence, seem both through his resume and his personal likes. His use of Facebook makes it seem that he is less sociable and outgoing than his peers, however, this cannot be fully confirmed only through his Facebook profile. This suggests

that he might not work as well in groups. He has very good self-control, seen through what he puts online as well as the frequency of use of social media. Overall, he has a very solid character, but these conclusions were made solely based on his Facebook and does not fully reveal his character traits. (B) Skills Observation In Mr. Jacobs resume, he states that he is skilled in the use of computer and very technologically savvy, he also states that he knows many programming languages. On his resume, he had two links to websites that he created. In one, he has a blog in which he writes about various topics such as Guidelines to a virtual image. In his other website life, liberty and the pursuit of science, he discusses new ideas in the scientific world as well as showcases his own ideas. He uses many different venues to show his idea, including: Videos showing his ideas, programs that calculate specific data, and models of different objects. Outside these two blogs and his Facebook, he uses very little other social media Interpretation Mr. Jacobs handling of these two website attest to his technology skills. His use of blogs, videos and programs indicate skills in many different areas of technology. His skill as a writer is also showcased through both his websites. He stated that he knows many different programming languages but this remains unconfirmed as all his programs on the website are all in the same language. His lack of a variety of social media suggest that although he is technologically skilled, he might not be as socially skilled. Conclusion Mr. Jacob is very skilled in the use of technology, as his resume stated he is very technologically savvy and know how to use it to his benefit. Although the statement about knowing many in not confirmed by his website, he is proficient in at least one language. He knows how to communicate very well, as seem through the various channels he uses for it: blog, video, and models. As previously mentioned, he is lacking in social skills but this might not be wholly true. He is undeniable skilled in technology but his other skills were not showcased as well online. (C) Extracurricular activities Observation In his resume, Mr. Jacob states that he is an active member of his church, many student organization, and frequently volunteers in his community. On his Facebook he has posted and is tagged in numerous photos of him with his church, one such photo has him with many other young people hosting a Christmas celebration. He is in many groups on Facebook that are associated with student organizations such as American institute of Chemical Engineers and Indian Student Association. He occasionally posts events that are being hosted by the club he is in. There are limited number of photos that link him to these clubs and even fewer that show him volunteering. He does not have a LinkedIn and there are no indications of any professional groups he is a part of. Interpretation Mr. Jacob interacts actively with his church, as seen in his photos with them, he frequently participates in celebrations and church related activities. Although he is part of many Facebook groups that are associated with student organization but the number of posts and photos indicate that he might not be as dedicated to his student organizations. His volunteering activities cannot be confirmed through his social media, this could be because he does not frequently go volunteering or because he choose not to publicize his volunteering activities. His lack of professional contacts indicate that he has not strived to

build a professional identity, this could be tied to the fact he had no work experience. This could indicate the he in not prepared to start working. Conclusion In terms of extra-curricular activities, Mr. Jacob shows passion towards serving his church and his student groups. He claims to have actively volunteered but it is unconfirmed. But he is very passionate about the activities the he does participate in. Although it seems that he might not be ready for a job, he is very passionate about the work that he currently does. Error Analysis The conclusions presented above are not entirely accurate, they are based upon interpretations of Mr. Jacobs Virtual Identity. Websites such as Facebook and LinkedIn only show what the users disclosed and thus cause an inaccuracy when determining a persons character. The websites created by Mr. Jacob are also tailored so to showcase his skills and his positive attributes. Therefore these conclusions should be taken as surface level research. Conclusion As my conclusions show, Mr. Jacob is an intelligent, skilled, and passionate person, but he is lacking in social skills and professional experience. His personality, conscious and intelligent, fits the profile our company is looking for and his skills and passion would make him a valuable asset to our company. The areas in which he is lacking arent major and can be overcome. Based upon these finding I would strongly urge you to consider him for an interview to gather more information on his personality and to judge the extent of his social skills. Information gained from an interview would reveal much more about everything mentioned here and would allow for a more informed decision. If he proves a worthy employee, he would be a significant addition to our workforce.
