Dear Mr. Wallace, Re: GISC9305-D2 AutoCAD Feature Sources / Map Book Output Please accept this letter as my formal submission of deliverable 1, AutoCAD and GIS Mapping Standard for GISC9305 CAD and GIS. During this project a number of tasks were completed in AutoCAD Map 3D 2014 based on data with a study area located in Redding, California. A mapping coordinate system was added to the map, feature sources were connected, proper stylization of the features was completed and combining these steps resulted in the creation of two final output maps. Once output map was created in 3D view, showing the entire study area and a 2D view map book was created with multiple pages tilling through the study area.

If you have any questions regarding the project please feel free to contact me by phone (647921-4930) or e-mail at your convenience. I look forward to receiving your feedback and suggestions.

Sincerely,

Introduction

During this project, a number of tasks in AutoCAD Map 3D 2014 were completed including; inserting raster images and manipulating through 2 and 3 dimensional views, creation of polyline contours, connecting to feature sources, stylizing feature sources, creating an output 3D map and creating a map book in 2D view.

2.0

Study Area

The study area for this project is in Redding California. The study area has a wide variety of elevations making it an ideal location to look at and experiment with a digital elevation model. Figure 1 shows a 3D view of the Redding California DEM.

Methodology

There were a number of steps completed during the project to create a three dimensional output map, as well as a 2 dimensional map book.

3.1

Mapping Coordinate System

The first step to begin the project was to set the projection of the AutoCAD map file. The projection used is North American Datum 1927 California State Planes, Zone 1 (401) US Foot. This coordinate system was added to the map before any steps were completed.

3.2

Connecting to Feature Sources

Next data must be added to the map file by connecting to feature sources. The raster DEM of Redding California is first connected by connecting to data from the display manager. Next the Add Raster or Surface Connection is selected, and the DEM file is located and added to the map. Once the Redding DEM is connected and added to the map, the roads feature source is added. The same steps are taken, but instead of adding a raster image or surface connection, an SDF connection is made and the roads are added to the map.

3.3

Stylizing Raster Image

Once the raster image was added to the map, an appropriate height theme palette and exaggeration was applied. Heights range from approximately 131ft to 604ft. The area has wide ranging elevation values due to being a mountainous region. An appropriate palette theme of beige to dark orange was applied; with beige representing lower elevations, and elevation increasing as palette colours darken. Figure 2 shows the height theme palette that was applied to the Redding California DEM. The elevations are classed into eight different shades, increasing in elevation with darker palette shades.

Figure 3 shows a portion of Redding with a vertical exaggeration of 1. It can be noticed that the changes in elevation are difficult to identify throughout the image.

Figure 3: Redding California DEM, Vertical Exaggeration 1

Figure 4 below, shows a clip of the study area in Redding, California with a vertical exaggeration of 5. In this image the changes in elevation throughout the scene are identified much easier. The final output map shown in Appendix 1 was created with a vertical exaggeration of 5 to allow the map user to view the elevations changes.

Technical Memorandum: AutoCAD Feature Sources and Map Book Output, Redding California Shannon Graup shannon.graup@gmail.com Next polyline contour lines were created on the Redding, California DEM. The contour lines were created at intervals of 20m, with every fourth contour line as a major contour and label. The created contour lines can be seen overlaid on the Redding, California DEM in green. Figure 5 shows the study area in Redding with the major and minor contour polylines over laid on the Redding DEM.

Lastly hillshading was applied to the Redding, California DEM. A hillshade with a direction of south, 180 and an angle of 45 was applied to the DEM. A sample of the hillshaded DEM can be seen below in Figure 6.

Stylizing Feature Source

Once the raster image was stylized and contours added the roads feature source was stylized appropriately. The roads feature source style was changed to the colour black, to stand out from the beige to orange coloured DEM, and the green contour lines. The roads were layered on top of the DEM so that they drape over top of the elevation changes. An example of how the roads feature source appeared in AutoCAD can be seen in Figure 7.

Figure 7: Roads Feature Source, Redding, California

With the roads draped over top of the DEM, they move with the different elevations and appear on top of the different elevation heights.

Some of the most important attribute fields in the roads feature source are seen below in the Figure. L_F_ADD, L_T_ADD, R_F_ADD and R_T_ADD fields are address number fields for the left and right sides of the street. Left from and left to correspond to the first and last street number addresses on the left side of the street. These fields are useful if you want to geocode addresses. The street name field identifies the street segment name, street type field identifies the street level anywhere from local roads to highway and the length field identifies the street segment length.

3.5

Three Dimensional Map Creation

Once the raster image, contours and roads feature source were appropriately stylized a map was created to plot the study area of Redding, California in three dimensional view. A copy of the final 3D Redding, California map can be seen in Appendix 1. To create this layout the viewport was expanded to an appropriate size, annotation was added to display a title, map creator, creation date and the data projection, a scale bar was added showing the scale in feet and lastly a north arrow was inserted. A legend was completed and later inserted into the map layout.

3.6

Map Book Two Dimensional View

The last task in this project was to create a map book in AutoCAD Map in two dimensional view. An example of the map book can be seen below, in Figure 9. Appropriate information was added into the title blocks located on the right side of the map book. A legend was added, as well as the creation date. The key map located in the Key Map title block has the entire map area with the current map book viewing tile, and the tile name can be found in the bottom right corner title block called Sheet Number. When flipping through map book pages, the key map tile will change, and the sheet number will also change to the corresponding tile being viewed.

Conclusion

During this project in AutoCAD Map the following steps were completed to create the final mapping outputs to view the elevations of Redding, California; adding a mapping coordinate system, connecting to the raster image and feature source, creating a 3D map and creating 2D map book. The final 3D map output of elevations in Redding, California can be viewed in Appendix 1.
