PROCEDURE
Introduction (25 min.): Attention Grabber: I will start the class by doing the eye trick (one hand over the other, what is their dominate eye) in order for figure out which hand each students should be using. Assessment of Prior Knowledge: Have a discussion on who has done archery before and some of the different things archery does for health and can be used outside of school. Expectations for Learning and Behaviour: The expectations for learning are for the students to be fully participating and engaged in archery. The expectation for behaviour is for students to practice archery in a safe manner while also listening closely to the teacher for all instructions. Advance Organizer/Agenda: Before the class begins, the archery equipment will be set up to eliminate time spent for set up. Transition to Body: Before giving students the chance to try out archery, I will go through the safety protocol that will be in effect for the entire unit. Some of things that I will talk about when giving my lecture will be: Zero tolerance rule Hazards of Archery Teacher instruction importance How to nock your arrow Hand and finger position Aiming and release As well, a archery handbook will be provided to the students for study throughout the unit in preparation for their final unit test. Body (50 min.):

Learning Activity #1: For the remainder of the class, students will practice one by one how to prepare, aim and release their arrow. Students will do some repetitions one at a time so that I may judge and see their progress and technique and comment on where improvements need to be made. Assessments/Differentiation: As this is the introductory lesson of the unit, I will be solely observing the students on their technique and not their accuracy. I will do this in order that the students are building a good foundation and can see where each student is at on the first day of lesson and how far they have progressed by the end. Motivation: The motivation for this lesson will be positive reinforcement (comments on proper technique and good form or advice given to improve), modeling (leading by example by showing students how safe I am being when in the unit and how I clearly want my safety expectations met after every class) and music (personal enjoyment). Closure (5 min.): Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: A quick whip around with students in order to tell me some of the safety guidelines and technique guidelines they learned in the lesson today. Feedback From Students: The feedback I will receive back from students is their comments during our discussions and their baseline performance. Feedback To Students: The feedback the students will receive back from myself will be in the form of verbal comments regarding technique and my lecture on safety and outlining expectations as it pertains to that. Transition To Next Lesson: Go into more detail about archery stance.

Archery Targets Archery Bows and Arrows Gym Baseline Worksheet

PROCEDURE
Introduction (15 min.): Attention Grabber: Students will set up archery equipment and targets. Assessment of Prior Knowledge: Quick whip around review of the safety concepts the students learned from last class. Transition to Body: I will hand out regulation scoring sheets for students to take their baseline scores for archery. Basically, it is a tool for students to see where they shot at the beginning of the unit and where they are at the end. Afterwards, I will lead a quick discussion about some of the aspects of stance that students need to know and use when shooting. Aspects include: straddling the line, facing the wall, nocking arrow and then pulling back line and lining up target and releasing. We will also go through finger position on the arrows. Body (60 min.): Learning Activity #1: For the remainder of the class, students will shoot three arrows in succession in order practice their stance and shooting ability. At the end of their repetitions, they will return to their groups and fill out their regulation target sheets that will be used for their baseline. After a half hour or when every student has completed enough of their baseline, we will do a kings court challenge with the groups. Each group member will shoot an arrow, if your group hits the most points they move up the ladder or stay on kings court, if your group loses you go down the ladder. During the baseline shooting, students will be able to bring in homework or other materials to work on while waiting around because archery does involve plenty of wait time. Assessments/Differentiation: For this lesson I will be solely observing the students on their technique. I want to observe students as they use the proper mechanics needed in order to build a good foundation. I will be slightly

assessing their accuracy through the baseline sheet I will hand out to them. However, this would be used formatively in this lesson as well as a student self-evaluation. Motivation: The motivation for this lesson will be positive reinforcement (comments on proper technique and good form or advice given to improve), modeling (leading by example by showing students how safe I am being when in the unit and how I clearly want my safety expectations met after every class) and music (personal enjoyment). Closure (5 min.): Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: To close out the class, students will hand in their baseline sheets and get ready to go to the next period. Feedback From Students: The feedback that I will be receiving from the students will come from their baseline worksheet, their performance using the technique and the conversations that we have in class. Feedback To Students: The feedback that students will receive from myself will be in the form of verbal comments and eventually their baseline worksheets after the final day. This is will be apart of their technique mark. Transition To Next Lesson: Go into more detail about archery scoring.

Archery Targets Archery Bows and Arrows Gym Scoring Quiz

PROCEDURE
Introduction (25 min.): Attention Grabber: YouTube clip of Robin Hood shooting at a target. Assessment of Prior Knowledge: Ask students to remind me what they think the most important steps for good technique in archery is. Transition to Body: I will lead a brief lecture on the process of scoring in archery. I will teach the students that each ring is worth a corresponding number and will give a couple different visual scenarios for students to calculate as an entire class. Body (35 min.): Learning Activity #1: For todays class, students will practice their technique with a zombie shootout. Students will get into their groups and I will place zombie targets on the archery stands. I will also back up the quivers if the students have shown that they are progressing throughout the prior classes. Students will have three arrows and shoot at the zombie. There will be points awarded for certain areas hit. For example head, leg, shoulder, eye. Students will compete with other groups and try to score the most amounts of points. Assessments/Differentiation: For this lesson, I will be observing the students technique as well as their accuracy when shooting at the zombie targets. Another assessment I will be using is the scoring quiz that will be done near the end of class. Motivation: The motivation for this lesson will be positive reinforcement (comments on proper technique and good

form or advice given to improve), modeling (leading by example by showing students how safe I am being when in the unit and how I clearly want my safety expectations met after every class) and music (personal enjoyment).

Closure (20 min.): Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: To close out the lesson, students will complete a scoring quiz (provided by teacher mentor) that will directly apply to the lecture in the beginning of class. Feedback From Students: The feedback that I will receive back from students will be primarily from the scoring quiz. This shows me that students understand the concept of scoring. Another feedback will be from the performance of the students during the activity. Feedback To Students: The feedback that I will give back to the students will be verbal comments when they are shooting. Another form of feedback will be the marks given on the scoring quiz to the students. Transition To Next Lesson: The next lesson will start with our major portion of the unit, which is the Olympic Biathlon.

PROCEDURE
Introduction (15 min.): Attention Grabber: Begin the class by playing the Olympic anthem. Assessment of Prior Knowledge: Ask students about how many of them watched the Winter Olympics. Ask about the biathlon and the different aspects that students saw. Transition to Body: I will explain to the students how the Olympic Biathlon is going to work for the next two classes. For this class it will be the combine or skill testing and the next lesson will be the competition. I will also ask for 6 students to nominate themselves as team captains or I may pick 6 students. These students will be the coaches and will scout the rest of the students throughout the day in order to prepare for the draft at the end of class. Body (50 min.): Learning Activity #1: Students will participate in a various number of activities that test certain skills needed in the biathlon. Skills such as shooting (archery), running (full gym dash), mental toughness (obstacle course) and strength (push ups). The team captains will first scout each group of students as they complete the tasks and will also participate so the other students can see the certain skills that their team captains possess. Assessments/Differentiation: The assessments for this class will be pure observation. This class will not be marked because of the fact that the next lesson will be a big archery competition day where students will be marked on performance in a major way. Motivation: The motivation for this lesson will be positive reinforcement (comments on proper technique and good form or advice given to improve), modeling (leading by example by showing students how safe I am being when in

the unit and how I clearly want my safety expectations met after every class) and competition (students are competing against each other which leads to increased motivation to perform better).

Closure (15 min.): Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: The class will close out with our captains drafting players onto their teams. Feedback From Students: The feedback that I will be receiving back from students will be in the form of their performance during the activities. Feedback To Students: The feedback that I will be giving back to the students will be solely comments. This is a lesson where I will be minimally marking. Transition To Next Lesson: The next lesson will be our Olympic Biathlon competition.
