I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes): Third grade students will be able to identify characteristics of the sun and its effect on planet Earth by watching a Brain Pop video and completing the worksheet. II. 1. Temperature- is a degree of hotness or coldness the can be measured using a thermometer. 2. Photosphere- surface of the sun. 3. Core- central part of the sun. IV. Implementation A. Introduction 1. Teacher will introduce the lesson by having the students play a Vocabulary Beach Ball Game, relating to the previous lesson. 2. Teacher will write different words relating to the four seasons. 3. Students will toss the ball among each other, wherever their left thumb lands 4. Students will read it out loud and state what season it corresponds with. 5. Teacher will give them clues if a student is uncertain. 6. Teacher will then tie the previous lesson to the Sun lesson and how the sun affects the Earth and its affect on the seasons. B. Development 1. Teacher will show the class a Brain Pop video on the Sun. 2. Teacher will discuss the video 3. Teacher will point out the vocabulary words that might be challenging for the students. 4. Students will fill out the worksheet relating to the video. 5. Teacher will go over the worksheet on a doc camera. 6. Teacher will divide the students into groups of 4. 7. Teacher will show the class a tutorial on turning the Pizza Box into a Solar Oven so they can have a visual of the Inquiry. 8. Teacher will provide the groups with all the materials needed for the inquiry. 9. Teacher will instruct groups to make their own Solar Oven by using the video as a reference. 10. Class will go outside (sunny weather necessary) and make smores. 11. Students will fill out a Science Discover Log for the inquiry. 12. Teacher will collect Science Discovery Log 13. Teacher will hold a class discussion on the area rug discussing some tips and problems with the groups boxes. 14. Teacher will relate and discuss the video to the Inquiry and the power of the sun on Earth. 15. Teacher will tell students to go back to their seats. C. Closure 1. Quick Doodle: Draw a picture of how you imagine Earth if the sun was closer to our planet, and if the sun was further away. 2. Teacher will remind the class of the Brain Pop video, the sun, location, and temperature.
